In an ad hoc mesh network, roles are assignment to the different network nodes, for example mesh point or mesh portal. The invention envisages that a network node identifies the certification and thus the permitted roles of another network node before it sends a message to said other network node. Method and apparatus for wireless transmission of data packets

A method for transmitting data in a wireless radio network having a multiplicity of base stations for wirelessly sending and receiving data, wherein the base stations are wirelessly networked such that each base station can communicate wirelessly with one or more adjacent base stations. Broadcast messages are transmitted between a mobile station for wirelessly sending and/or receiving data and the base stations and broadcast messages are also forwarded between the base stations. These broadcast messages do not have an associated explicit connection between two units in the radio network. Moreover, the mobile station which receives a broadcast message can process this message regardless of the base station from which it originates. This avoids so-called 'hand offs,' which are used in the prior art to associate a mobile station with a new base station when the mobile station moves out of range of the earlier base station. These hand offs result in time delays which are unacceptable in safety-critical applications. The novel method is particularly suitable for use in traffic systems, particularly in rail traffic systems, in which, by way of example, a train is controlled via a central unit using the radio network. In such applications, it is particularly important for no relatively long delays to arise in the data transmission, since otherwise the safety of the traffic system is no longer assured.

Method, network nodes and system for broadcast transmission of data

An ultra-broadband signal having a plurality of pulses is transmitted from one or more transmitting nodes to one or more receiving nodes. In the ultra-broadband signal, data are transmitted by pulses having a first pulse rate in a first data transmission and by pulses having a second pulse rate in at least one second data transmission, with each second pulse rate higher than the first pulse rate. The pulses having the second pulse rate are transmitted in intervals, during which no pulses having the first pulse rate are transmitted. This has the advantage that by utilizing time gaps between pulses of the first data transmission, the data of a second data transmission can be transmitted at a higher pulse rate. The transmitting and receiving nodes need not be coordinated explicitly or coordinated from the outside.

In a method for calibrating a propagation-time-based localization system in a computer-assisted manner, the position of a mobile object in a predetermined environment can be determined by detecting propagation-time-based variables of multiple base stations, wherein the propagation-time-based variable of a base station represents the propagation time of a signal between an object radio unit and the base station. The object is moved and the variables of the base stations are detected in the process at multiple measuring times. The minimum value of the variables of a base station is associated with a predefined minimum distance between the object and base station and the maximum value with a predefined maximum distance. A predefined dependence of the distances between the object and base station is scaled to the association of the minimum and maximum value. The scaled dependence is then used when determining the position of the mobile object.

A method for making safety mechanisms available in wireless mesh networks which have a plurality of nodes that are interconnected by multi-hop communication in a wireless network meshed by mesh routing in the MAC layer, every node being active as a router to forward the data traffic of the other nodes. At least two differentiated levels of confidence are defined by a type of protection (ToP) the value of which represents a specific level of confidence for the nodes and data packets, the data packets being labeled with a ToP value in the mesh header, and at least one ToP value being allocated to the participating nodes, the nodes forwarding the data packet in the mesh network using the ToP values of the node and of the data packet if this ToP value combination is admissible in the node.

A method and a device for determining a position of a communication apparatus is provided. To determine a position of a first apparatus a first signal is transmitted from a second apparatus to the first apparatus. A second signal is then transmitted from the first apparatus to the second apparatus as a response to the first signal, the first signal and the second signal being transmitted by way of at least two different mediums. Signal strength of the second signal received by the second apparatus and a transfer time from a first time of transmission of the first signal to a second time of receipt of the second signal are measured. The position of the first apparatus is finally calculated as a function of the measured signal strength of the received second signal and the measured transfer time.

A method determines a route in distance value for use in routing protocols. An optimum route is determined for time-critical transmissions such as videotelephony or VoIP. For this purpose, the route distance value is calculated as the product of the link metrics for the links of a route, said link metrics being the product of data packet arrival rates. This value is the optimum value for the route which requires the lowest number of repeated packet transmissions (retransmissions). Optionally, an additional factor can be inserted in the link metrics, which factor ensures that the length of a route is also taken into consideration.
