A rolling-contact bearing has a speed-detecting device which includes a sensor which is fixed to a non-rotating race of the bearing, and an encoder element which is mounted on a subassembly which includes two rotating races. The rolling elements of the bearing are held by two axially spaced cages. The encoder element has an active part and a radial part which supports the active part. The radial part extends between the two cages. The active part of the encoder element has an axial dimension which is greater than the axial distance between the two cages.

The rolling-contact bearing comprises one outer race 11, two inner races 12,13, two rows of rolling bodies 14 held in cages 15 and a built-in device for detecting the speed of rotation, of the type comprising a sensor means 17 and an encoder means 19 which are located in the annular chamber defined between the inner races 12, 13 and outer race 11 and the rolling bodies 14. The encoder means 19 comprises an active part 20 capable of creating in the sensor means 17 a periodic signal of frequency proportional to the rotational speed of the bearing 1. The encoder means 19 comprises a support part 21 secured to the inner races 12,13 and made of a nonmagnetic material, so that the said support part 21 axially holds the inner races 12,13 against each other before the bearing 1 is mounted in the mechanical assembly for which it is intended. According to the invention, the encoder axially secures the inner races after the bearing has been assembled and cannot come into contact with the rolling bodies.

A device for monitoring the state of the tire of a vehicle wheel and for measuring the rotation characteristics of the wheel is described herein. The device includes a rotating encoder element constituted by a multipolar magnetic ring, whereby magnetic segments of different polarity are distributed circumferentially in a regular and alternating manner. The device further includes a transmitter coil mounted coaxially with the multipolar ring, a fixed pick-up element constituted by an induction coil enclosed in a U-shaped section of an annular flux focusing element arranged coaxially with the multipolar magnetic ring. The device is energized by an alternative electric current flowing through the transmitting coil which generates a magnetic field superimposed on the magnetic field created by the multipolar magnetic ring, wherein the pick-up element delivers a signal relating to the rotation characteristics of the wheel and the state of the tire.
