The present invention relates to guidance during a medical intervention. In order to provide an improved navigation support with a facilitated setup, a system () for navigation support is provided. An image data input () receives a plurality of acquired 2D X-ray images of a subject's body from different angles. A set of markers, which are visible in X-ray images and which are detectable by a navigation system, is assigned to the subject. A marker detecting arrangement () is provided that detects a current spatial location of the markers assigned to the subject. A data processor () reconstructs a 3D volume of the subject based on the plurality of 2D X-ray images. At least a part of the markers is arranged outside the volume covered by the reconstructed 3D volume of the subject, while the markers are visible in the 2D X-ray images. The data processor () identifies the markers in the 2D X-ray images based on image data of the plurality of 2D X-ray images outside the 3D volume and determines a spatial location of the markers in relation to the 3D volume of the subject. The data processor () also registers the reconstructed 3D volume of the subject to a current spatial position of the subject based on the detected current spatial location of the markers and the determined spatial location of the markers in relation to the 3D volume of the subject. An output interface () provides the registered reconstructed 3D volume for navigation.

Navigation support

An orthopedic pin () for optically analyzing a bone region () includes an elongate shaft () and at least one optical fiber (). Orthopedic pin for optically analyzing a bone region

A tissue sensing device for use with an electrosurgical knife is proposed which comprises a proximal end portion, a distal end portion and a grip portion there between. The proximal end portion is configured for attachment to a housing of the electrosurgical knife. The distal end portion is configured for movably supporting a blade of the knife. A distal end of an optical fiber is arranged at the distal end portion of the device and a proximal end of the optical fiber is connectable to an optical console, so that optical measurements can be performed at the distal end portion.

Optical tissue feedback device for an electrosurgical device

A system may generally comprise a tracking device, an ultrasound device and a processing unit. A position and orientation of the ultrasound device may be traceable by the tracking device. The processing unit may be configured (i) to receive 3D information of a region of interest in relation to a marker, with both the region of interest and the marker being located within a body, (ii) to determine the position of the marker relative to the ultrasound device based on an ultrasound image of the body including the marker, and (iii) to determine the position and orientation of the ultrasound device relative to the tracking device. The system may further comprise a visualization device and the processing unit may further be configured to generate a visualization of the region of interest in relation to an outer surface of the body.

Systems providing images guiding surgery

A biopsy device is provided comprising a tubular member, a hollow shaft and an elongated fiber body. The hollow shaft may have a distal end and a shaft, wherein a laterally (sidewardly) facing notch is formed in the distal portion of the shaft. The elongated fiber body may include at least one optical fiber, preferably at least two optical fibers, with a distal end. The tubular member is movable relative to the shaft, between a first position in which the notch is covered by the tubular member, and a second position in which the notch is not covered by the tubular member. The fiber body is movable within the shaft, between a first position in which the distal end of the optical fiber is located at the distal end of the shaft with the elongated fiber body extending through the notch, and a second position in which the distal end of the at least one optical fiber is located proximally to the notch.

System with photonic biopsy device for obtaining pathological information

The invention relates to an apparatus for determining a property of a tissue, particularly cancer of cervical tissue. A light providing unit () provides light for illuminating the tissue () and a light detection unit () detects light from the tissue, wherein a first signal being indicative of light () having been influenced by an epithelium region (R), a second signal being indicative of light () having been influenced by a boundary region (R) and a third signal being indicative of light () having been influenced by a stroma region (R) are generated, and wherein a tissue property is determined based on the first, second and third signals. This allows for an determination of a tissue property, which is based on a combination of optical properties measured in the three different regions, resulting in an improved determination of the tissue property, in particular in improved cancer detection.

Apparatus for determining a property of a tissue

A medical imaging system for identifying a target structure (TS), e.g. a tumor, in a biological tissue. A hyperspectral camera system is used for imaging a surface area (A) of the tissue (BT), e.g. with a limited spectral resolution, but enough to allow identification of suspicious areas where the target structure (TS) may be, e.g. such areas can be visually indicated on a display to the operator. A probe (PR), e.g. an optical surface probe, is used to provide probe measurement of a smaller surface area (A) of the tissue, but with more information indicative of the target structure. The probe is selected to provide a higher specificity with respect to identification of the target structure than the hyperspectral camera (HSC). The hyperspectral processing algorithm (PP) is then calibrated based on probe measurement data performed within the suspicious areas, thus providing a calibrated hyperspectral processing algorithm resulting in images with an enhanced sensitivity to identify the target structure. Only few probe measurements are required to significantly improve the resulting image, thereby providing a reliable and fast target structure (TS) identification.

A biopsy device with a hollow shaft is suggested, the shaft having a wall and a distal end portion, wherein a sidewardly facing notch is formed in the distal end portion. At least two optical fibers are arranged in the wall of the shaft so that end surfaces of the fibers are arranged in a longitudinal direction at opposite positions with respect to the notch.

Side-looking lung biopsy device

A biopsy device is provided having a shaft and a tubular member. The shaft may be movably accommodated within the tubular member and may have a longitudinal axis and a distal end with a bevel. At least two channels are formed within the shaft in a longitudinal direction of the shaft, each channel forming an opening in the bevel surface, wherein an optical fiber is accommodated within each of the channels. Optical fiber connector

A biopsy device includes a tubular member, a hollow shaft and an elongated fiber body having at least one optical fiber. The hollow shaft has a laterally (sidewardly) facing notch in its distal portion. The tubular member is movable relative to the shaft, between a first position in which the notch is covered by the tubular member, and a second position in which the notch is not covered by the tubular member. The shaft is movable between a first position in which the distal end of the optical fiber is located at the distal end of the shaft with the elongated fiber body extending through the notch, and a second position in which the distal end of the at least one optical fiber is located proximally to the notch.

The present invention relates to an optical fiber connector for mating a first group of one or more optical fibers () with one or more corresponding optical fibers in a second group of one or more optical fibers (). The optical fiber connector includes a shutter (), which prevents the ingress of debris into the connector, and provides an optical reference surface with which to calibrate optical fibers that are inserted into the connector. The present invention relates to an optical fiber connector that finds application in the general field of optical inter-connection. Optical fiber connector validation

An interventional device, e.g. a Vacuum Assisted Biopsy (VAB) needle, incorporating optical fibers such that biological tissue in a volume at a side of the interventional device can be substantially completely optically probed by optical spectroscopy. In a VAB embodiment, a plurality of optical fiber pairs connected to respective optical ports, are placed at opposite positions along the suction cavity, and they are readout subsequently allowing to make a map of the tissue properties along the place where the tissue will be cut by the VAB needle. Based on decision software in an optical console, it can be determined whether the tissue present in the cutting cavity is completely normal tissue or not, prior to actually performing the biopsy on the tissue. In this way a well defined end point for VAB is created. In one embodiment, the optical fibers are arranged in a wall structure of a thin sleeve which fits onto existing VAB needles, thus allowing the VAB needle to be upgraded with an optical probing capability.
