Rechargeable battery cells are provided in which electrolyte comprises SOand a conductive salt, wherein upon discharge a reaction product is produced at the positive electrode. The rechargeable battery cells can comprise carbon and a conducting element having a three-dimensional porous metal structure, and can include optional components such as a metal oxide that catalyzes at least one reduction reaction at the cathode upon discharge and/or a metal halide. Methods of making and using such rechargeable battery cells are provided.

A rechargeable battery cell has an electrolyte comprising a conducting salt. This disclosure relates to a rechargeable battery cell having a positive electrode, a negative electrode, an electrolyte, which comprises a conducting salt, and a separator, which is arranged between the positive electrode and the negative electrode. The negative electrode and the positive electrode are each an insertion electrode. The electrolyte is based on SO. The separator comprises a separator layer which is an organic polymer separator layer. The thickness of the organic polymer separator layer, relative to the loading of the positive insertion electrode with active material per unit area, is less than 0.25 mm/mg.

Disclosed is a process for producing an electrolyte for an electrochemical battery cell. In this process, a Lewis acid, a Lewis base and aluminum are mixed. The mixture is heated for a minimum period of six hours to a temperature above a minimum temperature of at least 200&#xb0; C. and above the melting point of the mixture. An adduct of the Lewis acid and the Lewis base is thereby formed.
