Benzyl ether-type phenolic resins are useful in either a phenolic resin polyurethane cold-box (PUCB) process or a phenolic resin polyurethane no-bake (PUNB) process. The benzyl ether-type phenolic resins contain at least one formaldehyde scavenger in the form of a beta-dicarbonyl compound, and an alpha-carbonyl-carboxyl compound, particularly glyoxylic acid, binders based on these phenolic resins, and isocyanate compounds having at least two isocyanate groups. The resins having the inventive concept exhibit low free formaldehyde content. The inventive concept extends to molding material blends containing the binder, and a method for producing cores, molds or risers.

Phenolic resin binder with reduced formaldehyde content

Molding material mixes that contain a polyurethane binder based on phenolic resins of the benzyl ether type and polyisocyanates are characterized by the inclusion of a polybutadiene derivative. In one case, the polybutadiene derivative has epoxide groups and hydroxyl groups. In another case, the polybutadiene derivative has succinic acid anhydride groups. Molds, cores and risers are produced using these molding material mixes. Inclusion of the polybutadiene derivatives results in a reduction of sand adhesions in the molding process.

A release agent is disclosed for use with an organic binder system used in metal casting. The binder system has a Part I component including an epoxy resin and a free radical initiator and a Part II component having an epoxy resin and an acrylate, where the Part I and Part II components are kept separate until the time of use. The release agent will typically have a molecular weight in the range of 150 to 160, with eight to ten carbon atoms. Two examples of the epoxide are pinene oxide and decene-1 oxide, each of which is effective as an internal release agent when present in the binder for a cold box process in the range of about 0.15% to about 1% of the total weight of the Part I and Part II components.

Mold material mixture containing additives for reducing casting defects

Defects can arise in a product of a metal casting process from reactions occurring at a metal-mold interface. A method that reduces the defects uses an organic binder system by introducing a separate third component to a two-part polyurethane-based binder system used in the cold box or no bake process. The third part is added only after the first two parts are mixed with a refractory molding material to provide a shapeable foundry mix. The third part is an alkyl silicate, such as tetraethyl orthosilicate ('TEOS'), an alkyl orthoformate, such as trimethyl orthoformate (TMOF) or triethyl orthoformate (TEOF), or combinations thereof.

A binder for mold material mixtures is a four-component material. It contains at least one phenolic resin component, at least one isocyanate component, at least one alkyl/alkenyl benzene and at least one dialkylated and/or dialkenylated naphthalene. The phenolic resin component acts as the polyol component and contains phenolic resin obtainable from the reaction between a phenol compound and an aldehyde compound. The isocyanate component contains at least one polyisocyanate with at least two NCO groups per molecule. The alkyl/alkenyl benzene has a boiling point above 250&#xb0; C. The dialkylated and/or dialkenylated naphthalene has a boiling point above 270&#xb0; C.

The invention relates to a molding material mixture for production of molded products for the foundry industry, comprising at least one fire-resistant base molding material and a polyurethane-based binder system comprising a polyisocyanate component and a polyol component. According to the invention, the polyurethane-based binder system comprises a portion of a carboxylic acid diester of a branched alkane diol, said portion being at least 3 weight-%, and a portion of aromatic solvent of less than 10 weight-% of the binder system. A preferable carboxylic acid diester is 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentandiol-diisobutyrate. The molded products produced from the molding material mixture for the foundry industry are characterized by a high strength and a lower generation of fumes and smoke during pouring.

Use of branched alkane diol carboxylic acid diesters in polyurethane-based foundry binders

The invention relates to a coated granular material, wherein the coating is a resin, comprising the reaction producing of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of cardol, cardanol or derivatives or oligomers of these compounds with an isocyanate component, and to a method for the preparation thereof. Water-soluble granular materials are suitable as substances to be coated. Examples of granular substances are fertilizers, crop protection agents, insecticides, pesticides, fungicides, drying agents and mixtures thereof. The substance coated according to the invention has advantageous properties since the resin can be applied in a selective and economical manner to the substrates due to its low tackiness. In particular, coated fertilizer granulates are advantageous in that, with regard to the applied amount of fertilizer, they can provide more nutrients to the plant. In addition, fertilizers can be provided that can provide nutrients to the plant over a longer period of time and continuously and they have an exact and reproducible release behavior according to the type of plant to be treated. Furthermore, the polyol component of the coating can be obtained from the renewable raw material cashew nut oil.
