Disclosed is a selected type of copolymer composition comprising copolymers having units derived from ethylene and dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) co-monomers. Such copolymer compositions: a) have a DCPD-derived comonomer unit content of from about 25 mole % to about 45 mole %; b) have a Weight Average Molecular Weight, M, of greater than about 170,000; c) comprise amorphous material and have glass transition temperatures, T, of from about 8&#xb0; C. to about 129&#xb0; C., which also fit the equation T(in &#xb0; C.)&#x2267;[(mole % DCPD&#xd7;3.142)&#x2212;4.67]; and d) comprise no significant amount of crystalline polyethylene homopolymer or crystallizable polyethylene segments within the ethylene-dicyclopentadiene copolymers. Such copolymers can be readily derivatized by hydrogenation and/or epoxidation to provide polymeric materials suitable for use as engineering thermoplastics. Also disclosed are processes for preparing and optionally further derivatizing ethylene/dicyclopentadiene copolymers having the characteristics hereinbefore described.

Ethylene/dicyclopentadiene copolymers and functionalized derivatives thereof

A polymer composition comprises (a) least 40 wt % (based upon the weight of the composition) of a cyclic olefin polymer comprising at least one acyclic olefin and at least 20 wt % of one or more cyclic olefins (based upon the weight of the cyclic olefin polymer), wherein at least a portion of the cyclic olefin polymer has a glass transition temperature of greater than 100&#xb0; C.; (b) an acyclic olefin polymer modifier in an amount up to 40 wt % (based upon the weight of the composition); and (c) at least 10 wt % (based upon the weight of the composition) of one of more fillers. The polymer composition has a notched Izod impact resistance measured at 23&#xb0; C. of greater than 100 J/m and a flexural modulus (1% secant method) of greater than 1400 MPa.

Use of an ionic halide free copper catalyst for the production of dialkyl carbonates

A method for preparing a high-purity ionic liquid having a pH value of 7 and an elemental analysis deviation of less than 0.5 wt % between a calculated elemental analysis and a found elemental analysis for each of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen, wherein the method comprises forming a monophasic or biphasic mixture of an ionic liquid and an inert liquid. When the monophasic mixture is formed, it is filtered to yield a filtrate from which the high-purity ionic liquid is recovered. When the biphasic mixtures is formed, it is separated into an aqueous phase and ionic liquid phase, whereby the ionic liquid phase is filtered to yield a filtrate from which the high-purity ionic liquid is recovered. Furthermore, the present purification procedure can be used for the clean-up of a contaminated ionic liquid by extracting it into a polar extractant to form an extract containing the ionic liquid. Water traces are removed from the extract. Then, the extract is filtered and the high-purity ionic liquid is recovered from the filtered extract.

Method for preparing high-purity ionic liquids

A novel supported ionic liquid moiety which may further comprise immobilized ionic fluids and catalytic material is described. A method for making the composition is also described.

Ionic liquid compositions

The present invention is related to a method for forming aldol condensation products, comprising reacting at least one aldehyde starting material in the presence of an ionic liquid medium and a basic catalyst at a temperature range of from about &minus;20&deg; C. to about 300&deg; C. and at a pressure range of from about 1 atm to about 1000 atm for a sufficient time to form the aldol condensation products. The invention is also directed to a method for forming aldol condensation products, comprising reacting at least one aldehyde starting material in the presence of a basic ionic liquid medium at the same parameters specified above. The advantage of the instant invention is the increased selectivity and productivity of the resulting aldol condensation products formed in ionic liquid media, along with the ability to recycle the ionic liquid for use in producing additional aldol condensation products.

Process for conducting aldol condensation reactions in ionic liquid media

The present invention provides a novel catalytic system comprising catalysts immobilized on ultra-large mesoporous compositions, and particularly compositions having a large percentage of pores with a mean diameter of at least about 50 &angst;. Catalysts, such as organometallic complexes can reside in these pores to effect catalytic reactions. Such compositions include silicates covalently bound to a ligand that in turn can covalently bind an organometallic fragment. For asymmetric organometallic catalysts, the catalyst is bound to the mesoporous composition via an achiral ligand. The catalytic reactions include hydrogenation, hydroformylation, carbonylation and carbon-carbon coupling reactions, such as Heck or Suzuki reactions. The present invention provides catalyst for performing asymmetric reactions to achieve products of high stereoselectivities. The present invention also relates to ionically immobilized catalysts. In addition, the large pore sizes of these compositions can be used for polymerization reactions where the pore sizes can be tuned to achieve a particular molecular weight distribution. Other uses of the porous compositions include support materials for combinatorial chemistry.

Surface-confined catalytic compositions

This invention provides an article, compositions, methods of making and uses of vapor-deposited metal compounds immobilized on porous substrates. The substrate is a porous substrate having an average pore size of at least about 8 &angst; and a surface area of at least about 10 m /g. The methods describe the vapor-deposition of an inorganic compound onto the substrate where the deposition is accomplished with a relatively small amount of ligand loss. The substrate can be pre-treated to achieve a uniformly dispersed metal compound deposited on the substrate. The inorganic compound can decompose into a metal compound. The article can also function as a catalyst for carbon-heteroatom coupling reactions such as carbon-carbon coupling reactions, most notably, the Heck reaction.
