In a method and apparatus for restraining passengers in a retaining passengers in a vehicle upon impact with an obstacle, a possible accident is initially sensed. Thereafter, at the latest, whenever the vehicle first contacts the obstacle, or whenever vehicle deceleration exceeds a threshold, a force acting in the direction of impact is exerted upon the passenger via a seat belt system. The force is introduced by bilateral tensioning of a lap belt of a seat belt system, from both sides at a force of at least 2000-4500 N. The latter is maintained for a retaining phase of at least 20 ms along a displacement path of the passenger.

Vehicle seat which effects a sideways movement of the occupant sitting on the vehicle seat during a lateral impact or directly before a lateral impact. A belt tightener of a seat belt in a vehicle, in particular a motor vehicle, is provided with a retracting spring in order to return the belt. A counterspring, which can be adjusted by a motor, is connected in parallel with the retracting spring in order to be able to reduce the tensile force of the belt for comfort considerations. The motor can also be connected in drive terms to the belt via a coupling arrangement to give reversible belt tightening.

In a method for the avoidance of rollover phenomena in semitrailers with the emission of warning signals for the driver of the vehicle when driving inappropriately, the center of gravity of the load of the semitrailer is calculated in an on-board computer. From the center of gravity thus determined and the known weight of the loaded semitrailer, the on-board computer calculates a rollover limit as a function of instantaneous driving parameters, on exceeding of which limit a warning is issued to the driver of the vehicle.

Internal combustion engines, which have an exhaust-gas turbocharger that possesses an adjustable turbine geometry, include a waste-gate bypass. When a valve controlling the waste-gate bypass malfunctions, the pressure in the intake-system branch and the exhaust-system branch may increase to an undesirably high level, which may result in component parts being damaged. To prevent this in an internal combustion engine having an exhaust-gas turbocharger, a pressure sensor is provided, which determines the pressure in or upstream from the turbine and transmits it to an electronic control unit. When the control unit determines that a preselected limiting value of the pressure has been exceeded, the turbine geometry is modified so that the turbine may be prevented from being damaged. This arrangement is provided for internal combustion engines, which have an exhaust-gas turbocharger and are equipped with, in particular, an engine-braking device.

A backrest for a vehicle seat, having a head restraint and backrest padding, and having a supporting element which is intended for the seat occupant's back and, is compliant, at least in the upper backrest region, in such a manner that the seat occupant's back is able to shift rearwards relative to the head restraint in the event of a rear-end collision of the vehicle. The supporting element is formed by a shaped cushion that is integrated in the backrest padding in the upper backrest region, and filled with a gaseous medium, in particular air. In the event of a collision this supporting element can suddenly be deflated.
