In order to connect fibers so as to ensure high efficiency of light transmission through connectors, fiber ends must be centered in terminals with a high degree of accuracy. In the proposed connector, each fiber terminal serves as a mold for the injection of a polymer or a fiber-retaining adhesive. A simple geometrical device is employed for centering the fiber end within its terminal, accuracy of centering being ensured solely by the device itself without being dependent on precision-machining of the terminal. The invention is applicable to either single or multiple connectors employed in optical-fiber data-transmission systems.

The invention relates to the field of connectors for optical monofibres. In the case where the monofibre (1) is covered by a flexible sheath or envelope (3), the fixing in a connector end fitting may suffer from poor concentricity. According to the invention, a deformable cylinder (4) is placed round the fibre and to said cylinder are applied forces (P) balanced in four perpendicular directions transmitted to the flexible sheath (3) of the fibre by four, internal clamping jaws (31), which bring about a spontaneous recentering of the fibre by the creep or flow thereof. The cylinder is then placed in the end fitting. The applications relate more particularly to optical fibres with plastic sheaths for telecommunications purposes.

In order to make a connection between the fibers of an optical transmission line, the end portion of each fiber is centered in a connector terminal by means of a reference dihedron. The terminal is applied against the faces of the dihedron at one end. The other end of the dihedron is fitted with a set of two packing-blocks and two cylinders for positioning the optical fiber in the bisecting plane in a direction parallel to the edge of the dihedron. The fiber is finally fixed in position by means of a suitable adhesive.

The invention relates to a manual and portable device for crimping ferrules onto bundles of optical fibres comprising a number of fibres such that these fibres may be hexagonally arranged. The device primarily comprises means for holding the ferrule in the tool, crimping means essentially consisting of an element supporting three knurled rollers which is capable of being rotated whilst the three knurled rollers, at the same time as rotating, may be moved progressively nearer the axis of the bundle until their spacing corresponds to the minimum cross-section of the bundle. The device may also comprise a release mechanism enabling the approach movement of the knurled rollers to be stopped when this cross-section is reached.
