A flexible plate is securable to a cylinder by insertion of fastening tabs, provided on beveled or angled ends of the plate, into cooperatively shaped end positioned pockets on the cylinder surface. The pockets may be formed by insert strips that utilize spaced tines to define the individual pockets.

A plurality of inking blade plates are positioned in abutting fashion between cooperating insertion and clamping strips to form an inking blade. A temperature differential is created between the blade plates and the strips which are then allowed to return to a common temperature. This creates a uniform spacing between each of the inking blade plates in the inking blade. The resulting inking blade is usable with an ink ductor roller in a rotary printing press.

A flexible plate is securable to a cylinder by insertion of fastening tabs, provided on beveled or angled ends of the plate, into cooperatively shaped and positioned pockets on the cylinder surface. The fastening tabs are spaced axially by interposed tongue and cut-outs. These spaced tabs and tongues form an axially discontinuous joint across the width of the cylinder on which the flexible plate or plates are positioned.

Excess ink is emptied from an ink duct of a rotary printing machine and is deposited in a collecting container which is removably secured to the ink duct adjacent an upper end of an inclined bottom of the ink duct. A hand manipulable doctor blade is usable to transfer the ink out of the ink duct and into the excess ink collecting container.

A roller bearing support assembly utilizes one or more pairs of lever arms to support an ink forme roller or a dampening forme roller. Each lever arm includes a U-shaped seat for an axle trunnion of the roller. These seats facilitate the quick removal and replacement of the rollers in the levers without disruption of the roller's adjustment. The rollers can be thrown on or thrown off the cooperating plate cylinder by pivotal movement of the lever arms.

A printing plate adjusting assembly which is usable to effect side register adjustment of printing plates on a plate cylinder utilizes a plurality of individually axially shiftable insert bars carried in a cylinder groove. Each insert bar has a printing plate engaging register pin. Differentially threaded screws are usable to shift one bar with respect to another.

Several cylinders in a multiple cylinder printing press are supported in eccentric bushings so that they can be moved into and out of contact with cooperating cylinders. A force can be applied to these cylinders by rotating the eccentric bushings. The total resultant force will be applied in a direction away from the cylinder or cylinders into which the movable cylinder has been brought into contact.

Method and apparatus for adjusting printing unit cylinders

A bearing play adjusting assembly is useable to adjust the bearing play in an axle journal of a printing plate cylinder of a rotary printing press. A pressure plate is secured to an end of the axle journal and bears against an inner bushing. A shim plate is placed between the pressure plate and the axle journal end. The thickness of the shim plate can be changed to adjust the bearing play of the cylinder axle journal bearing.

A circumferential register adjusting assembly utilizes concentric inner and outer bushings which overlie an axle journal of a plate cylinder. Axial movement of the outer bushing is converted into rotational movement of the inner bushing and of the plate cylinder. A centrally pivoted two arm lever is used to accomplish the axial movement of the outer bushing.

A web-fed rotary printing assembly includes first and second printing couples. Each printing couple has upper and lower printing pairs of plate cylinders and blanket cylinders. An impression cylinder is pivotably supported cooperatively with the blanket cylinder of the first printing couple. Each of the blanket cylinders is also pivotably supported. This assembly allows the press to perform perfecting as well as being suitable as an imprinter. Flying plate changes may also be accomplished.

A support assembly for a cylinder groove in a plate or blanket cylinder of a rotary printing machine utilizes an elongated support bar. The support bar has an upper support surface and is secured either directly or indirectly to the bottom of the cylinder groove. The upper support surfaces of the support bar is placed in the cylinder groove generally between ends of the printing plate or blanket carried by the cylinder at a height which effectively presents a continuous cylinder surface to eliminate cylinder deflection oscillations.
