An electric machine comprising the following features: (a) an outer, first stator part and an inner, second stator part, the two stator parts being coaxial and being radially spaced apart by an intermediate space; (b) each stator part has, facing the intermediate space, a circumferential series of stator poles, at least a partial number of which carries a winding; (c) a rotor part disposed in the intermediate space; (d) the rotor part has a circumferential series of alternating permanent magnets and magnetic flux conducting pieces, said permanent magnets being magnetized in circumferential direction; (e) the width of the permanent magnets&mdash;measured in circumferential direction&mdash;is larger on the central radius of the rotor part than radially outside and radially inside on the rotor part and the width of the magnetic flux conducting pieces&mdash;measured in circumferential direction&mdash;is correspondingly smaller on the central radius of the rotor part than radially outside and radially inside on the rotor part.

Gas diffusion electrodes ( ) for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are modified such that the diffusion of water therein is inhibited in comparison with un-modified electrodes. Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells with the modified gas diffusion electrodes can be operated, with on the average unchanged operating conditions, without addition of water, since the gas diffusion electrodes do not allow more water to escape than that formed during the reaction of burnable gas and oxidizing agent, and guarantee sufficient membrane moisture.

A particularly inexpensive, homogeneous and porous gas diffusion electrode which comprises at least one electrically conductive, hydrophobic and gas-permeable gas diffusion layer, comprising a mechanically stable support material which is impregnated with at least one electrically conductive material having a bulk conductivity of &gE;10 mS/cm is produced. The gas diffusion electrode can be coated with a catalytically active layer. The electrodes of the invention are particularly suitable for use in fuel cells and electrolysis cells.
