The invention provides a polymer dispersion for paper coating compositions, obtainable by means of a radically initiated, aqueous emulsion polymerization in the presence of one or more emulsifiers and optionally protective colloids, of a) 50 to 93% by weight of at least one vinyl ester of an alkanoic acid with 1 to 12 C-atoms, whose homopolymer has a glass transition temperature Tg of below about 350&#xb0; K, b) 2 to 30% by weight of ethylene, c) 5 to 20% by weight of at least one monomer whose homopolymer has a glass transition temperature Tg of at least about 350&#xb0; K, d) 0.1 to 2% by weight of ethylenically unsaturated silane monomers, e) 0 to 5% by weight of further ethylenically unsaturated monomers that are copolymerizable with vinyl acetate and ethylene, based in each case on the total weight of the monomers used for the polymerization, with the data in % by weight summing in each case to 100% by weight.

Binder for paper coating compositions

A process for preparing an aqueous emulsifier-stabilized vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer dispersion with weight average particle size in a range from 100 nm to 300 nm includes emulsion polymerization of a reaction mixture including: a) vinyl acetate and ethylene, b) 0.05 to 1% by weight, based on the total weight of monomers and comonomers, of at least one functional comonomer selected from the group consisting of ethylenically unsaturated monomers with at least one phosphate group or phosphonic acid group or their salts and ethylenically unsaturated sulphonic acids or their salts,c) 0.5 to 5% by weight, based on the total weight of monomers and comonomers, of at least one anionic emulsifier and optionally one or more nonionic emulsifiers, andd) optionally at most 0.5%, based on the total weight of monomers and comonomers, of a protective colloid. The process reactor uses an external heat exchange circuit.

A method of improving the wet tensile strength of a cellulose-containing web includes applying to the web an aqueous binder emulsion and subsequently drying and curing the binder emulsion. The aqueous binder emulsion is prepared by emulsion-polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising vinyl acetate, ethylene, and an olefinically unsaturated crosslinking monomer in the presence of a phosphate ester surfactant wherein the at least one crosslinking monomer comprises a (meth)acrylamide moiety and a cellulose-reactive moiety. The binder emulsion may be applied to a cellulose-containing web to increase wet strength, aid in creping, or both.

Phosphate-containing binders for nonwoven goods

A cellulosic product such as paper coating composition is disclosed comprising aqueous-based semi-crystalline vinyl acetate-ethylene polymer emulsions, containing crystalline ethylene segments, which are useful for imparting oil, grease, solvent, water, and moisture vapor resistance. The polymer emulsions are prepared via the direct aqueous-based free radical emulsion polymerization of ethylene with various other comonomers. The semi-crystalline aqueous-based polymer emulsions of this invention have a crystalline melting point and a crystalline heat of fusion ranging from 5 to 100 J/g. The semi-crystalline aqueous-based emulsion polymers of this invention can be used directly as a paper or paperboard coating for imparting oil, grease, solvent, water, and moisture vapor resistance. Further, the present invention provides a repulpable paper and paperboard.

This invention is directed to aqueous-based ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) polymer emulsions suited for use in heat seal applications. The EVA polymers of this invention are produced by a relatively low-pressure process, i.e., less than 2000 psig, preferably from about 1000 to about 2000 psig. The aqueous-based EVA based polymer emulsions contain crystalline segments resulting from ethylene linkages and are prepared by emulsion polymerizing ethylene and vinyl acetate, preferably with a carboxylic monomer, in the presence of a stabilizing system containing surfactant or a cellulosic protective colloid in combination with surfactant.

Improved aqueous emulsion vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) polymer adhesives for use in packaging applications and on difficult to bond surfaces such as polyethylene, poly(ethylene terephthalate), and oriented polypropylene. The VAE polymers contain about 55-80 wt % vinyl acetate, 15-45 wt % ethylene, and 0-30 wt % of one or more additional ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable monomer, based on the total weight of monomers. Cast films of the VAE emulsion polymers of this invention should have a tensile storage modulus (test frequency of 6.28 rad/sec) within the area encompassed by the following data points: 1.times.10.sup.5 and 2.times.10.sup.7 dynes/cm.sup.2 at 23.degree. C., and 1.times.10.sup.3 and 2.times.10.sup.6 dynes/cm.sup.2 at 70.degree. C.; preferably within the area encompassed by the following data points: 1.times.10.sup.6 and 1.5.times.10.sup.7 dynes/cm.sup.2 at 23.degree. C., and 3.times.10.sup.4 and 9.times.10.sup.5 dynes/cm.sup.2 at 70.degree. C.

Adhesive for difficult to bond surfaces

This invention relates to improved vinyl acetate-ethylene emulsions for use in formulating high performance paints without the need for coalescing solvents. These latexes are based on copolymers of vinyl acetate and ethylene optionally containing a comonomer such as an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate. Paints formulated from these latexes, without coalescing solvents, are characterized as having substantially no insolubles, the resin particles in the emulsion are characterized as having a particle size of from 0.2 to 0.35 microns measured as weight average by capillary hydrodynamic fractionation. In other words, the copolymer particles are characterized in that a small percentage, up to about 5% of the total number of particles in the latex, have an average size greater than 0.35 microns, and a small percentage have a size smaller than about 0.2 microns. Further the resin particles are essentially monodisperse. Ethylene in place of the conventional acrylate as the low Tg monomer wit the resulting resin particles having a Tg of from minus -5.degree. to 8.degree. C. The improved process for producing the emulsion or latex includes as an important component the formation of a seed latex and then polymerizing the monomers in the presence of the seed, the monomers being introduced over a period of time.
