In order to prevent working medium from accumulating in the compressor housing () of a piston compressor () in a simple manner by means of a sealing of the piston rod () in the form of sealing medium barrier supplied by a hydraulic unit (), it is provided that a ventilator () and a sealing medium container (), which is partially filled with sealing medium, are provided in the hydraulic unit (), wherein the ventilator () suctions air from the free space of the sealing medium container (), and the free space () in the sealing medium container () is connected via a line () to the compressor housing (), and an opening () is provided at the compressor housing () for connecting the interior of the compressor housing () to a purge gas reservoir ().

High temperatures of the sealing medium occur in a hydraulic sealing medium barrier for sealing a piston rod of a piston compressor, and there is the risk of soil and abrasion being deposited there and interfering with the function of the seal. To prevent this, a sealing configuration () which is provided for circulating sealing medium through an outlet line () for sealing medium which is connected to the recess (), and a circulating device () is provided, with which the sealing medium is circulated through the recess () while maintaining the pressure (p) of the sealing medium through the inlet and the outlet line ().

A support ring () and a piston ring () that are arranged in a peripheral groove () provided on a piston body (), the axial width of the peripheral groove () being greater than the total axial width of the support ring () and of the piston ring (), and the support ring () is arranged radially inwardly at a distance from the piston body (), and the support ring () is relief-milled from the piston body () as an unbroken ring.

Due to increasingly strict requirements and regulations, it is becoming more and more important for piston compressors to reduce the amount of leakage of operating medium through the seal of the piston rod. Conventional seals comprising packing rings and/or packing ring combinations always have a certain amount of leakage, both during operation and when at standstill, which is why they are not usable for certain applications, or the complexity involved in such a seal increases considerably. A further problem involving the seals of piston rods relates to transverse movements by piston rods during which the sealing action of the seal must be maintained. Proposed is, therefore, a sealing arrangement according to the principle of a sealing medium barrier providing that the sealing elementsare arranged in radial direction at a distance relative to the radial end of the recessthat receives the sealing elements

A multipart packing ring for sealing a piston rod of a compressor includes ring segments and sealing segments which are alternatingly arranged to form a ring. The ring segments include a curved main part and an axial shoulder and the sealing segments include a curved main part and an axial projection. The circumferential ends of the main part of the ring segments and the circumferential ends of the axial projection of the sealing elements face one another and define first wear gaps there-between.
