A method for operating an internal combustion engine is described. At least one composition of a gas mixture is determined in at least one combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. At least one combustion chamber pressure is detected in the interior of the combustion chamber and at least one local combustion chamber temperature is detected in the interior of the combustion chamber. The composition is inferred from the combustion chamber pressure and the combustion chamber temperature.

An apparatus for determining the homogeneity of a fluid flow in a pipe, such as a reducing-agent flow in an exhaust-gas pipe of an internal combustion engine, including a transmitter arranged on a light-transmissive region of the pipe and a diametrically opposite detector. The transmitter and detector being coupled such that they are rotatable through an angle of 360&#xb0; about a rotational axis which is located substantially in the axis of symmetry of the pipe. The transmitter and the detector are rotated through at least 360&#xb0; about the rotational axis, thus capturing an intensity of the detected light over the rotation angle, and from this a homogeneity of the fluid flow is deduced.

Apparatus and method for determining the homogeneity of a fluid flow

A method of controlling a reducing agent generation system of an internal combustion engine includes generating a reagent substance in a form of pulses and delivered to an exhaust gas duct of the internal combustion engine upstream of an SCR-catalytic converter for the selective catalytic reduction of the nitrogen oxides contained in an exhaust gas. A catalytic converter model is used to model a reagent substance fill level of the SCR-catalytic converter and a closed-loop feedback control system compares the modeled reagent substance fill level with a storage set point. A reagent substance demand signal is generated that at least releases a reagent substance pulse when a difference between the storage set point and the reagent substance fill level exceeds a specified threshold value.
