Apparatus, systems, and methods for monitoring the performance of an individual during a fitness activity are disclosed. A method of monitoring the performance of a participant engaged in a fitness activity includes receiving a GPS signal during the fitness activity at a portable fitness device used by the participant; determining participant performance data based on the received GPS signal; at a stationary position beacon, transmitting location data associated with the location of the stationary position beacon; at a mobile participant receiver supported by the participant, receiving the location data from the stationary position beacon; and modifying the participant performance data based on the data received from the stationary position beacon.

Fitness activity monitoring systems and methods

A sports ball, for example a soccer ball, comprising a hollow shell and a pit suspended within the hollow shell by a plurality of cords. In some embodiments, the plurality of cords may comprise a first end coupled to the hollow shell at a first location, a second end coupled to the hollow shell at a second location, and a center portion coupled to the pit. A method of tracking a participant engaged in a fitness activity includes determining a location of the participant during the fitness activity based on data received at a portable fitness device used by the participant; determining a location of a spectator during the fitness activity based on data received at a mobile spectator device used by the spectator; from a server, sending an alert to a spectator at a spectator device during the fitness activity indicating that the participant is within a predetermined distance of the spectator; and sending an alert to the portable fitness device during the fitness activity indicating that the spectator is within a predetermined distance of the participant.

A method for monitoring the motion of a sport ball that has been impacted by an individual during the course of an athletic activity includes the steps of the sport ball sampling motion data from one or more of its motion sensors at a sampling rate, the sport ball saving the sampled motion data in a buffer at a first saving rate, the sport ball saving at least a portion of the sampled motion data in a file separate from the buffer at a second saving rate, wherein the second saving rate is adjustable separate from the sampling rate and varies during the course of the athletic activity based on impacts to the sport ball, and the sport ball wirelessly transmitting the sampled motion data in the file to a portable electronic device.
