An exemplary thermal management system includes, among other things, a heater loop, a battery loop, a radiator loop, and a power electronics loop operating within a glycol system. A first valve is in fluid communication with one or more of the heater loop, the battery loop, the radiator loop, and the power electronics loop. A second valve is in fluid communication with one or more of the heater loop, the battery loop, the radiator loop, and the power electronics loop. The second valve is fluidly connected to the first valve to provide at least one operational condition where waste heat from power electronics in the power electronics loop is used to heat a battery in the battery loop.

An exemplary thermal management system includes, among other things, a heater loop, a battery loop, a radiator loop, and a power electronics loop operating within a glycol system. A first valve is in fluid communication with one or more of the heater loop, the battery loop, the radiator loop, and the power electronics loop. A second valve is in fluid communication with one or more of the heater loop, the battery loop, the radiator loop, and the power electronics loop. An exemplary thermal management system includes, among other things, a valve, a radiator loop configured to be connected to the valve, a power electronics loop configured to be connected to the valve, a heater loop configured to be connected to the valve, and a battery loop configured to be connected to the valve. This disclosure details thermal management systems with two or more cooling loops for thermally managing multiple components of an electrified vehicle. An exemplary thermal management system may include a deaeration device that is fluidly connected to two or more cooling loops (e.g., a traction battery pack loop, a power electronics loop, etc.). The deaeration device is configured to allow for deaeration of the two or more cooling loops while reducing coolant transfer and heat transfer between the two or more cooling loops.

A cold ambient battery chilling mode of an electric vehicle may be implemented if the vehicle battery is being charged when the ambient air temperature is low and a temperature of the battery is elevated. During cold ambient charging, coolant flows through a heater core and through a battery heat exchanger. Cold ambient air may be utilized to cool the coolant flowing through the heater core, and coolant from the heater core flows through the battery heat exchanger and cools the battery during charging. A battery chiller may be deactivated when the cold ambient battery chilling mode is activated to reduce energy consumption.

Thermal management systems and methods for operation thereof are provided for allocating coolant flow in a vehicle. The thermal management system includes a cabin heat exchanger in fluidic communication with a heater and an energy storage device heat exchanger in fluidic communication with the heater. The thermal management system is designed to, in a first mode, flow heated coolant from the heater to the cabin heat exchanger in a first coolant loop and flow cooled coolant to the energy storage device heat exchanger from an energy storage device cooler in a second coolant loop temporarily separated from the first coolant loop and, in a second mode, flow heated coolant from the heater to the cabin heat exchanger and then to the energy storage device heat exchanger in series.

Thermal management system in a vehicle and method for operation of the system

An exemplary assembly includes, among other things, a manifold having an interior area with a baffle, and a reservoir. The baffle divides a portion of the interior area into a first region that is part of a first fluid loop of a vehicle, and a second region that is part of a separate, second fluid loop of the vehicle. The reservoir is configured to hold a supply of liquid that is in fluid communication with both the first and second regions. An exemplary method includes, among other things, communicating a fluid from a supply within a reservoir to both a first and a second region within an interior area of a manifold. The first region is part of a first fluid loop of a vehicle. The second region is part of a separate second fluid loop of the vehicle.

A thermal management system for a vehicle includes a coolant loop routed through a traction battery, a battery chiller, a power electronics device, and a radiator. The system also includes a battery bypass valve in the coolant loop configured to, in a bypass position, bypass the traction battery and the battery chiller. The system includes a controller programmed to, in response to a demand for cabin cooling being greater than a predetermined demand, operate the battery bypass valve in the bypass position.
