The present invention relates to a method for controlling an electrical generator comprising a two-stroke free piston internal combustion engine having a first cylinder and a second cylinder aligned on a common axis, a first piston pair comprising a first piston and a second piston located in the first cylinder, a second piston pair comprising a first piston located in the second cylinder and connected to the second piston in the first cylinder by a first connecting rod and a second piston located in the second cylinder and connected to the first piston in the first cylinder by a second connecting rod, with the first and second pistons of each piston pair moving in opposite directions to one another, a fuel supply for providing fuel to at least one of the first cylinder or the second cylinder, and a generator comprising at least one rotor connected to at least one of the first connecting rod or the second connecting rod, and at least one stator winding that cooperates with the at least one rotor to generate electricity. The method comprises detecting at least one of piston speed or piston position for at least one of the first piston pair or the second piston pair, and adjusting a compression ratio in at least one of the first cylinder or the second cylinder by at least one of impinging a voltage on the stator winding or altering the fuel supply.

An electromagnetic actuator for actuating a gas-reversing valve on a piston internal combustion engine includes two electromagnets. Each electromagnet includes a one yoke body presenting a pole face. The pole faces of the two electromagnets face each other at a distance. Each yoke body has two parallel grooves that are open toward the pole face and form a coil window with a coil disposed in the coil window. An armature is arranged to move back and forth between the pole faces counter to the force of at least one restoring spring. The two electromagnets each have a different load profile.

The sensor piece is connected to the control element and to a fixed coil arrangement surrounding the bar-like sensor arrangement at least over a partial length, the coil arrangement comprising at least two coils, arranged one behind the other and connected to a voltage supply and a signal recorder in the form of a carrier frequency measuring bridge, whereby the bar-like sensor piece reduces interfering voltages.

A method for controlling an electromagnetic actuator for a cylinder valve in a piston-type internal combustion engine with the actuator being operatively connected to the cylinder valve and moveable back and forth between two electromagnetics, counter to the force of at least one restoring spring. The current supplied to the electromagnetics is controlled with the aid of a sensor arrangement and via an engine control unit such that the current supply to the catching electromagnet, i.e., the electromagnet being approached by the moveable armature of the actuator, is controlled so as to move the armature slowly toward the respective pole face. Moreover, in order to regulate the valve play during the closing movement of a cylinder valve, the current supply to the catching electromagnet is controlled such that the valve initially touches down softly on its seat and that following the valve play, the armature touches down softly on the pole face.

The invention relates to a method for determining the position and/or the speed of motion of a control element which can be moved back and forth between a first and second switching position. According to said method, an immersion body which is connected to the control element is guided through at least one stationary plunger coil, synchronously with the motion of said control element. The voltage that is generated as a result of the immersion body moving in relation to a permanent magnet and/or a permanent magnet moving in relation to the plunger coil is detected as a signal for the speed of motion of the control clement. The changes in impedance and or a current that are caused as a result of the movement of the immersion body in the plunger coil are detected as a signal for the position of the control element.

A method for controlling an electromagnetic actuator operating a gas exchange valve in an internal combustion piston engine. Between two electromagnets an armature, connected to the gas exchange valve, is reciprocated by a return spring between the electromagnets whose alternating energization moves the valve into open and closed positions. The lift of the armature is detected by a sensor array during its movement from one pole face to the other. Depending on the detected actual values of the armature lift, the energy flow to the electromagnets is controlled such that the armature moves at a speed tending to zero at a predetermined distance range from the pole face of the capturing electromagnet. At the end of the lift motion, the current flow through the capturing electromagnet is guided in such a way that the armature is maintained oscillating at a short distance from the pole face of the capturing electromagnet.

Method for controlling the final position of a gas exchange valve actuated by an electromagnetic actuator in an internal combustion piston engine

The invention relates to a method for controlling an electromagnetic actuator for activating a gas exchange valve on a reciprocating internal combustion engine, said gas exchange valve having two electromagnets that are set apart from each other and between which an armature that acts on the gas exchange valve against the force of at least one return spring is guided in such a way that it can move back and forth between the pole faces of the two electromagnets. The electromagnets are alternately subjected to a receiving current by means of a control unit and the movement of the armature on its path from one pole face to the other is detected by means of a sensor unit. Actual values relating to the movement of the armature are detected by the sensor unit in a first phase (I) beginning with the start of the release of the armature from the pole face of the holding electromagnet; the receiving electromagnet is controlled by the control unit in terms of the supply of current, according to the detected actual values relating to the movement of the armature, in a second phase (II), in such a way that the armature moves at a predetermined speed and with an acceleration around zero, within a predetermined range away from the pole face of the receiving electromagnet; and in a third phase (III), the supply of current of the receiving electromagnet is influenced in such a way that the armature meets the pole face at a predetermined minimum speed.

Method for controlling an electromagnetic actuator for activating a gas exchange valve on a reciprocating internal combustion engine

A method for starting up an electromagnetic actuator operating an engine cylinder valve. The actuator has two spaced electromagnets, between which an armature, connected to the cylinder valve, is reciprocated against a restoring spring from a center position to lie against a magnet pole face. An ECU alternatingly supplies the electromagnets with a capturing current, the level of which is regulated as a function of the approach of the armature toward a pole face, as detected by a sensor assembly. A reference temperature is detected for the magnets, and, at a normal temperature, the armature starts oscillating due to the alternating energization of the electromagnets, and is brought into contact with a pole face. Or, at a low temperature level, one of the electromagnets is supplied with a high current pulse.
