A pressure swing adsorption process with six adsorbers is operated with only one adsorber in an adsorption phase. The adsorbers pass through switching cycles wherein, following an adsorption phase, there are conducted four- or five-stage coccurent expansions, then a countercurrent expansion, a scavenging with cocurrent expansion gas, and a multistage pressurizing to the adsorption pressure. In this process, three or four pressure equalization stages are provided.

Six adsorber pressure swing adsorption process

A pressure swing adsorption process for the selective adsorption of at least one gaseous component from a gaseous mixture and an apparatus for performing the process wherein the gaseous mixture is conducted in cyclic alternation through at least three adsorbers and each adsorber is subdivided into two serially connected adsorber sections. The feed gas mixture is passed, during an adsorption phase, through respectively two series-connected adsorber sections. After termination of at least one cocurrent expansion phase, the adsorber sections are isolated from each other, and the first adsorber section, i.e., first traversed by the feed gas mixture, is further expanded while the second adsorber section is maintained at a higher pressure. Thereafter, the second adsorber section can be expanded countercurrently and thus-withdrawn countercurrent expansion gas can be utilized for purging the first adsorber section.

In a process for the separation of at least two crude gas streams of differing composition in a single pressure swing adsorption plant operated with several cyclically reversible adsorbers passing respectively through an adsorption phase, and a regenerating phase, comprising stages of expansion, purging, and pressure buildup, the improvement wherein said pressure swing adsorption plant comprises a plurality of groups of adsorbers, said groups communicating only via outlet sides thereof, and wherein each crude gas stream is associated with a single group of adsorbers through which the respective crude gas stream is conducted in a cyclically reversible fashion and separated therein, and that expansion gas is obtained at least during one stage of the expansion in one group of adsorbers is conducted into an adsorber of another group, the latter adsorber being in a regenerating phase.

A pressure swing adsorption process conducted with plural cyclically reversible adsorbers, each of the adsorbers undergoing identical switching cycles. An adsorption process for purifying or fractionating a gaseous feed mixture comprises an adsorption phase, at least one expansion phase, a purging phase and at least one pressure build-up phase. The expansion phase(s) and the purging phase produce residual process gas fractions. The sum total of volume, and/or mass streams of the residual process gas fractions comprises a residual gas stream which is maintained chronologically substantially constant by controlling the volume and/or gas streams of the gas entering the purging phase and maintaining the gas leaving the expansion phase(s) at a substantially constant value, dependent on the desired mass and/or volume quantity of the residual gas stream. The length of the purging phase and of the expansion phase(s) is adjusted accordingly so that the relationship of the length of time of the purging phase to the length of time of the expansion phase(s) is substantially the same as the relationship of the volume and/or mass of the gas fractions obtained during the purging to those obtained during the expansion phase(s), respectively. The control of the purging and of the expansion phase(s) can also be varied in response to a flow rate of a feed gas entering the process.

Adsorption process for the separation of gaseous mixtures

A method of operating a multi-adsorber pressure-swing adsorber installation in which each adsorber is, in a given cycle, operated for a plurality of time slots in an adsorption stage, subjected to a plurality of pressure-relief phases over corresponding time slots by pressure equalization with other adsorbers, the pressure-relief phases are followed by purging phases and ultimately pressure buildup phases likewise by pressure equalization with other adsorbers. According to the invention, upon the detection of a pressure condition, either by direct measurement of pressure or by measurement of another parameter, deviating from a setpoint value indicating a defect in one adsorber or its valve or duct systems, this adsorber is cut out of the system and the remaining adsorbers are continued to be cycled or are temporarily retained in a previous phase with readjustment of the sequencing so that the feed and output remain continuous, the remaining adsorber sequences corresponding to the number of adsorbers which remain operative.

An adiabatic adsorption method for pressure-swing adsorbers, e.g. for gas purification or separation of components of a gas mixture, in which several switchable adsorbers are used in an adsorption phase followed by at least two pressure-relief stages and at least one pressure buildup stage with an intervening purging in the adsorption-desorption/regeneration cycle. According to the invention, at least one of the adsorbers is operated as an auxiliary adsorber by comparison with a main adsorber with a reduced contact time between the adsorption medium and gases in the auxiliary adsorber. This reduced contact time can result from a reduced adsorption-phase period by comparison with that of the main adsorber (reduced residence time) and/or by using a reduced charge of the adsorption medium in the auxiliary adsorber by comparison with that of the main adsorber.
