The present invention relates to a thermoplastic resin composition and a method for making the same. The composition comprises the reaction product of about 10 wt % to about 50 wt % polyphenylene ether, about 35 wt % to about 65 wt % polyamide, preferably about 0.4 wt % to about 3.0 wt % carbon fibrils, and optionally about 5 wt % to about 40 wt % talc, up to about 10 wt % compatibilizing agent and up to about 20 wt % impact modifier. The method comprises forming a carbon masterbatch with polyamide and introducing the masterbatch and the polyamide subsequent to compounding the polyphenylene ether with a compatibilizing agent.

The above described deficiencies and drawbacks are overcome by the process for making poly(arylene ether)-polyamide compositions which comprise about 10 weight percent (wt %) to about 90 wt % poly(arylene ether), about 90 wt % to about 10 wt % polyamide, about 0.01 wt % to about 10 wt % compatibility modifier, and optionally other additives known in the art. The process comprises several components which can be employed singly or in combination, namely: utilizing resins and additives that are substantially free of gaseous oxygen (air-free; e.g. less than about 1.0 vol % oxygen preferred, and less than about 0.5 vol % oxygen especially preferred, and less than about 0.05 vol % especially preferred); melting and compounding under an atmosphere which is substantially air-free; adding up to 20 wt % of polyamide to the poly(arylene ether) before compounding; when employing an extruder with an atmospheric vent, operating with the atmospheric vent open; and performing the injection molding under an inert atmosphere.

The present invention relates to a thermoplastic resin composition and a method for making the same. The method for manufacturing a thermoplastic resin composition comprises introducing carbon fibrils and a polyamide into a first mixture comprising a polyphenylene ether, a polyamide, and a compatibilizing agent to provide a second mixture comprising, based upon the total weight of the second mixture: about 10 to about 50 wt. % of the polyphenylene ether, about 35 to about 65 wt. % of the polyamide, about 0.4 to about 3 wt. % of the carbon fibrils, and about 0.4 to about 3 wt. % of the compatibilizing agent; and blending the second mixture at a temperature sufficient to melt the polyphenylene ether.

A method for electrostatic painting (coating) of a non-conductive compatibilized poly(arylene ether)/polyamide polymer surface is disclosed, comprising applying a conductive layer on or adjacent to all or part of a side opposite the non-conductive polymer surface to be painted so as to provide sufficient conductivity to enable electrostatic painting of the non-conductive polymer surface. With the conductive layer in place the article can then be painted electrostatically. After painting, the conductive layer can optionally be removed without affecting the painted surface.

A thermoplastic composition comprising a poly(arylene ether), a polyamide, a compatibilizing agent, and a polyester ionomer exhibits reduced moisture absorption and improved paint adhesion. Use of the polyester ionomer allows use of lower amounts of conductive fillers.

The invention relates to a method of making a conductive thermoplastic composition containing at least one dispersed phase polymer with a continuous phase polymer and at least one conductivity imparting agent wherein the bulk resistivity of the composition is at least partially determined by the particle size of the dispersed phase within the continuous phase. The thermoplastic composition preferably comprises a compatibilized blend of at least one polyphenylene ether resin, at least one polyamide resin, and at least one conductivity imparting agent, and optionally, one or more of impact modifiers, stabilizers, antioxidants, lubricants, and fillers.

Improved thermoplastic compositions that are resistant to die beard growth are described herein, comprising poly(phenylene ether) resins, polyamide resins and an amount of a beard growth reducing agent selected from the group consisting of non-elastomeric polyolefin resins, partially fluorinated polyolefins, and mixtures of non-elastomeric polyolefin resins and partially fluorinated polyolefins, effective for inhibiting beard growth. The present invention deals with an extrudable thermoplastic composition comprising a compatibilized polyphenylene ether-polyamide resin blend. By using a polyphenylene ether with an intrinsic viscosity of more than 45 ml/g as measurred in toluene at 25 degrees C. and a concentration of 0.6 gram per 100 ml and a polyamide with a reduced viscosity of more than 175 ml/g as measured in sulphuric acid in accordance with ISO 307, it proved to be possible to obtain a blend which could be extruded without difficulties. Blends in which only one of the two resins i.e. the polyphenylene ether or the polyamide possessed the required viscosity values were less suitable for processing by extrusion. The composition may further comprise other usual additives.
