An agricultural baler comprises a baling chamber and pick-up device for collecting crop material from a field and feeding it to conveyor mechanism which transports it into the baling chamber. A plunger reciprocates therein for compressing the crop material to a package and a tying mechanism encircles the package with one or more strands of tying material, thereby forming a completed bale. The baler comprises bale discharge device disposed at the outlet of the baling chamber, the bale discharge device being movable between an extended position for receiving the completed bale and depositing it onto the field and a retracted position for reducing the overall length of the baler. In the retracted position, a rear portion of the bale discharge device is rested on a support on top of the baling chamber. The discharge device are held in their retracted position by the rear portion itself.

Bale discharge means for a rectangular baler

An agricultural baler having a baling chamber and apparatus for loading successive charges of crop material into the chamber. The cross section of the baling chamber is automatically adjusted to the load experienced by the plunger during compression of these charges and thereby controlling the density of the bales formed therein. The density control system further comprises elements associated with the actuator of the baling chamber for precluding adjustment of the cross section when no new charge of crop material has been introduced into the baling chamber. These elements comprise a sensor sensing the passage of such charge along a wall portion of the baling chamber and a by-pass valve which controls the pressure of hydraulic oil provided to the actuator. Thus the cross section of the baling chamber is prevented from being reduced further when the baler is turned on headlands.

Bale density control system for agricultural balers

An agricultural baler (1) having a duct (26) for the transportation of crop material to a bale case (10), wherein it is compressed into bales. Above the duct (26) is provided a loading device comprising a pair of cyclically rotating cranks (74), pivotably connected to a pair of levers (72) of a stuffing fork assembly (66). During operation the levers (72) are moved along journals (88) which fit in oblong slots (90) of said levers (72). The journals (88) are installed on pivotable members (94) which are forced upwardly in a first position against stop members (98, 100) by springs (99). Upon rotation of the cranks (74) the tines (70) of the fork follow a generally kidney-shaped path (92). When the tines enter the duct (26), the pivot members (94) are forced downwardly to a second position by the abutment of the journals (88) against plugs (106) in the slots (90), whereafter they are force upwardly by the cam member (102) of the cranks (74). The proper dimensioning and location of plugs (106) and pivot members (94) allows a substantial reduction of the peak speed of the tines (70) during the stuffing of the bale case (10). The forces applied by the crop material to the stuffer mechanism are reduced accordingly.

Baler stuffer mechanism and method

A shear bolt coupling incorporated in a drive transmission of an agricultural baler comprises a first rotatable member, a second rotatable member disposed coaxial with the first rotatable member, and a shear bolt operatively interconnecting the first and second rotatable members for transmitting power therebetween during normal operation. The shear bolt is arranged to shear off under excessive load conditions in order to interrupt power transmission between the rotatable members and thereby permit the rotatable members to move relative to each other. A shear bolt introducing lever is operatively associated with either the first or the second rotatable member for urging the shear bolt into a drive coupling position wherein the rotatable members are drivingly coupled together. The shear bolt introducing lever is movable relative to the rotatable members between an inoperative position clear of a shear bolt introducing area of the rotatable member having the shear bolt introducing lever associated therewith for enabling insertion of a new shear bolt, and an operative position for urging the new shear bolt into the drive coupling position.

Shear bolt coupling and method of replacing a shear bolt

A rectangular baler has a density control for controlling the density to which crop material is compacted by a cyclically operating plunger, and a cyclically operating tying mechanism for tying loops of binding material around successive lengths of the compacted crop material to form bales. In order for the tying mechanism to function properly the binding material must slide between a tied bale and the crop material being compacted against the tied bale. If the sliding friction is too great, the binding material breaks or is pulled free of the tying mechanism thus resulting in failure of the tying process. To reduce the sliding friction, the compaction density is reduced for an interval of time following each cycle of the tying mechanism. The interval of time may be tolled by counting a number of plunger cycles immediately following a cycle of the tying mechanism, the density control being set for reduced compaction density until the number of plunger cycles has been counted.

Method of density control in rectangular balers to improve the bale

An agricultural baler having a feeder mechanism operable to accumulate a charge of crop material in a feeder duct thent transfer an accumulated charge of crop material into a bale case. The feeder mechanism includes a plurality of tine bars provided with sets of tines so that at least two sets of tines are operative in the feeder duct at any given instant. A first tine bar carries two sets of packer tines while a second tine bar carries a set of packer tines and a set of stuffer tines. A third tine bar carries a set of packer tines along with a set of combination packer and stuffer tines. All of the packer tines have outer ends following a first path of movement and the stuffer tines have outer ends following a second path of movement which is offset relative to the first path of movement. The combination packer and stuffer tines have outer ends following a third path of movement which is offset relative to both the first and second paths of movement. The combination packer and stuffer tines effect a pre-stuffing stroke of the feeder mechanism whereas the stuffer tines effect a full stuffing stroke of the feeder mechanism.
