A food product containing an effective amount of an active agent which is hydroxymatairesinol, a geometric isomer or stereoisomer thereof, or an acceptable salt thereof, or a mixture thereof, where the food product is selected from the group consisting of a nutritional supplement and a nutrient. The food product can increase the level of enterolactone or another metabolite of hydroxymatairesinol in a person's serum thereby causing prevention of a cancer or a certain non-cancer, hormone dependent disease in a person, based on the administration of hydroxymatairesinol to the person.

A method for recovery of branch knot wood and/or normal wood from oversize chips in which the oversize chips are ground to splinter, which then is dried and mixed with water, and then the sedimented splinter containing high concentrations of extractive substances and having a high specific weight is recovered and extracted in order to recover valuable extractive substances, particularly lignans. This invention relates to a method for the recovery of organic substances dissolved or brought into a colloid form during the manufacture of a mechanical pulp where said mechanical pulp has not been subject to previous alkaline bleaching or other previous process carried out under alkaline conditions. The method is characterized in the deacetylation of the galactoglucomannans having been brought into dissolved or colloidal form during the pulping process, and subsequent deposition of said deacetylated glucomannans onto a solid phase, such as pulp fibers or organic or inorganic additives. The deacetylation is performed either by alkali or enzymatically. The method diminishes the organic substance loading on recycling waters and effluents, and improves the yield and strength properties of the pulp.
