A device and related method for dispensing liquid. The device includes a housing configured to contain a plurality of liquid dispensing members containing a liquid and configured to contain a receiving member in a receiving position to receive the liquid from the plurality of liquid dispensing members. The housing defines a first pressure chamber and a second pressure chamber. The first pressure chamber is capable of being sealed relative to the second pressure chamber. The device also includes a differential pressure generator operably connected to one of the first and second pressure chambers. The generator is capable of generating a pressure differential between the first and second pressure chambers to cause the plurality of liquid dispensing members to dispense liquid onto the receiving member.

A process is provided for using porphyrin or porphyrin derived compounds as universal labels for various assays and other quantification techniques without the need for a bridging agent to couple the label to the target particles. Particles which can be labeled include beads, microorganisms, cells, and molecules. The present invention provides a process of quantifying the number of viable cells in an aqueous suspension of cells using an energy-emitting non-hazardous probe and a probe-trigger. The process provides quantification data in short periods of time without the use of hazardous materials. A process of the present invention can also be used to quantify negatively charged particle number, assay for cytotoxicity, assay for cell proliferation and assay for cell differentiation. Still further, the present invention provides an assay kit for quantification of cells or negatively charged particles.
