A capacitance manometer comprises: a flexible diaphragm including a first electrode structure; an electrode structure including second and third spaced-apart electrode structures secured relative to the diaphragm so as to establish a capacitance between the first electrode structure and the second electrode structure and a capacitance between the first electrode structure and the third spaced-apart electrode structure, wherein the capacitances between the first electrode structure and each of the second and third electrode structures change with changes in differential pressure placed on opposite sides of the flexible diaphragm; and a thick film dielectric material disposed between the first electrode and each of the second and third spaced-apart electrode structures so as to increase the gain in capacitance of the manometer without decreasing the distance between the first electrode structure and each of the second and third electrode structures and without increasing the stroke of the flexible diaphragm, while preventing the first electrode structure from shorting with either the second or third electrode structure in response to over pressurization conditions.

Capacitance manometers and methods of making same

The present invention is directed at methods and apparatuses for facilitating the establishment of a reference pressure within a reference chamber of a pressure transducer. The transducer has a housing and a cover, the housing defining a reference chamber and an aperture. A meltable sealing material is disposed on at least one of the cover and the housing. The apparatus includes a pressure chamber that is rotatable between a first position and a second position, a pressure source that is connected to the pressure chamber, a guide that is attachable to the transducer near the aperture, and a heater for selectively heating the pressure chamber to a temperature sufficiently high to melt the sealing material. The cover is positioned in an internal space of the guide. The guide is attached to the transducer near the aperture. The transducer, cover and guide are placed in the pressure chamber, the pressure chamber is rotated to the first position and a pressure is generated in the pressure chamber via the pressure source. After a reference pressure has been established in the reference chamber, the pressure chamber is rotated to the second position. Gravity causes the cover to move within the space towards the aperture when the pressure chamber is rotated to the second position. The heater then heats the pressure chamber to melt the sealing material. Upon cooling, the sealing material forms a seal that seals the reference pressure in the reference chamber of the transducer.

Method and apparatus for forming a reference pressure within a chamber of a capacitance sensor

The axial distance between opposing conductors of a capacitance pressure transducer can depend, in part, upon the thickness of a seal that is disposed between a housing and a diaphragm of the capacitance pressure transducer. The present invention utilizes spacer elements and sealing beads to form a seal that is disposed between the housing and the diaphragm of a capacitance pressure transducer. The sealing beads have a melting temperature that is lower than the melting temperature of the spacer elements. The sealing beads are melted so that they flow around and surround the unmelted spacer elements. Upon solidifying, the sealing beads and the spacer elements thus form the seal. The thickness of the seal can be established accurately and uniformly by controlling the height of the spacer elements. By utilizing a seal that has an accurate and uniform thickness, the opposing conductors of the capacitance pressure transducer can be accurately positioned and oriented in relationship to each other during the manufacturing process.

Method of forming a seal between a housing and a diaphragm of a capacitance sensor

The disclosed pressure sensor includes a body, a diaphragm, and a flow defining structure. The body defines an interior volume. The diaphragm divides the interior volume into a first portion and a second portion. At least a first part of the diaphragm moves in a first direction when a pressure in the first portion increases relative to a pressure in the second portion. The first part of the diaphragm moves in a second direction when the pressure in the first portion decreases relative to the pressure in the second portion. The first part of the diaphragm and at least a first part of the body are characterized by a capacitance. The capacitance changes in response to movement of the first part of diaphragm relative to the first part of the body. The flow defining structure provides a fluid flow path from the first portion of the interior volume to a position outside of the internal volume. At least part of the fluid flow path extends from a first location to a second location. The at least part of the fluid flow path is characterized by a total length and a straight line distance. The total length is the shortest distance through the path from the first location to the second location. The straight line distance is the shortest distance between the first location and the second location. The total length is at least two times greater than the straight line distance.

Turbo sump for use with capacitive pressure sensor

An output device for a pressure transducer incorporates a cable connector and an electronic display. Both may be selectably positioned relative to the pressure transducer. In one aspect of the invention, the electronic display is rotatable around an axis perpendicular to the plane of the display. In another aspect of the invention, the cable connector is positioned by adjusting the connection of the output device relative to the pressure transducer. In some embodiments, the adjustability of the output device is provided through a bayonet connection between the output device and the pressure transducer. The adjustments to position of the display and of the cable connector may be performed without the use of tools. An output device constructed in accordance with the present invention may be field-configured in a multitude of ways, largely eliminating the need for the preselection of particular output devices for particular installations.

Output device for pressure transducer

A pressure transducer assembly includes a first body, a second body, a diaphragm, and an electrode. The diaphragm is mounted between the first and second bodies. The first body and the diaphragm form a first chamber. The second body and the diaphragm form a second chamber. The electrode is disposed in the first chamber. A portion of the diaphragm flexes in a first direction in response to pressure in the first chamber being greater than pressure in the second chamber. A portion of the diaphragm flexes in a second direction, opposite the first direction, in response to pressure in the second chamber being greater than pressure in the first chamber. A capacitance between the electrode and the diaphragm is representative of a difference between the pressures in the first and second chambers. In some embodiments, the electrode is suspended from a hub and spoke mounting. In some embodiments the electrode is entirely metallic. In other embodiments, the electrode includes a ceramic disk with a conductive film formed on the disk and the disk is coupled to the housing with a ceramic rod. In some embodiments, the transducer also has a low thermal coefficient of expansion member connected to the housing for reducing warping in response to temperature changes. In additional embodiments, the disk includes a groove that reduces the effects of temperature variations on a ceramic electrode.

Capacitive based pressure sensor design

A baffle is positioned near a diaphragm of a capacitive pressure sensor to have a small volume therebetween. The baffle creates a high aspect ratio path to create molecular flow for molecules to travel before reaching the diaphragm. The path encourages contaminants to stick to the baffle or housing before reaching the diaphragm. The sensor further includes a particle trap between an inlet and the baffle.
