A vacuum system is mounted on a portable milling machine for extracting material cut by the milling drum of the machine from the surface of a roadway. The milling machine includes a frame, a propulsion system for advancing the machine across a surface to be milled, a milling drum mounted on the frame for rotation about its axis, and a conveyor for conveying material cut by the milling drum away from the drum. The vacuum system includes a vacuum pump having an air inlet and an air outlet and a nozzle mounted behind the milling drum having an opening for receiving material cut from the surface by the drum. The vacuum system also includes a material collector having an inlet, an air outlet and a material outlet. The collector is adapted for collecting material entrained in air by the pump through the collector inlet and for discharging such material through the material outlet onto the conveyor. The vacuum system also includes a first conduit and a second conduit. The first conduit connects the nozzle and the inlet of the material collector, and the second conduit connects the air, outlet of the material collector and the air inlet of the pump.

Vacuum system for milling machine

A self-propelled trench-cutting machine includes a chassis and a drive assembly mounted to the chassis for driving the machine along a surface to be cut. The machine includes a boom and a rock cutting wheel that is mounted on the boom for rotation about a wheel axis. The boom has a first end and a second end and is mounted along a side of the chassis for pivotal movement about a pivot axis at the first end. A mechanism is provided for rotating the rock cutting wheel about the wheel axis, and a locking mechanism is provided that is adapted to lock the second end of the boom to the chassis.

Trench-cutting machine with cutting head lock mechanism

A method and an apparatus are disclosed for cutting rumble strips in the surface of a roadway. The apparatus is a self-propelled machine which includes a frame and a drive mechanism mounted to the frame and adapted for advancing the machine across the surface of the roadway. The machine also includes a generally cylindrical cutting drum that is mounted on the frame for rotation about an axis that is disposed generally parallel to the surface of the roadway. A plurality of cutting teeth are mounted on the outer surface of the drum in a predetermined pattern, and a mechanism is provided for rotating the cutting drum about its axis. The drum is maintained at a predetermined position with respect to the surface of the roadway so that the cutting teeth will cut into said surface a relatively constant, predetermined depth as the drum is rotated about its axis while the machine is advanced along the surface of the roadway. When the drum is rotated about its axis while being maintained at the predetermined position with respect to the surface of the roadway as the machine is advanced therealong, the cutting teeth will cut a series of spaced parallel rumble strips into the surface of the roadway. This improved machine is capable of smooth and uninterrupted cutting operation while advancing along the surface of the roadway at greater speeds and without the vibration that is characteristic of other known machines.
