An electrical submersible pump that regulates pump flow rate based on sensor measurements of the fluid is disclosed. The sensor measures a property of the fluid being processed. The sensor may be located at the intake, discharge or other area of the pump. The sensor measures the relative proportion of gas in the pumped liquid. The pump flow rate is adjusted to maintain a desired level for the gas in a production environment. The pump may be used to operate and control a seabed gas-liquid separation and centrifugal pump system.

An electrical submersible pump assembly has a motor cooperatively engaged with a pump for driving the pump and a motor lead extending to the motor for supplying power to the motor. The motor lead has an electrical conductor enclosed within a tube. The tube is sealed from an exterior environment of the motor and contains a dielectric fluid. The motor may be filled with a dielectric lubricant and the interior of the tube of the motor lead may be in fluid communication with the dielectric lubricant. Alternatively, the motor may filled with a dielectric lubricant and the dielectric fluid within the interior of the tube of the motor lead may be sealed from the dielectric lubricant.

A submersible pumping system for use downhole, wherein the system includes tubing disposed in a wellbore having a wet connection formed for coupling with a pumping system disposable in the tubing. An electrical power cable connects to the wet connection through the tubing. The wet connection comprises receptacles configured to mate with electrically conducting pins, the receptacles and the pins are oriented substantially parallel with the tubing axis. The receptacles are formed to receive the pins therein and form an electrical connection for connecting electrical power from the cable to the pumping system.

A subsea rotary gas separator system has a separator located adjacent the discharge of the pump for separating gas from the high pressure liquid stream exiting the pump. Some of the high pressure liquid is recycled back to the inlet of the pump to maintain a liquid-rich inlet stream for the pump.

A subsea well production system has a natural drive mode and a lift-assist mode using a submersible pump. The submersible pump can be installed while the well is live. The well system has a downhole safety valve in the production tubing. The operator closes the downhole safety valve and lowers an electrical submersible pump assembly into the production tubing. Once landed, the valve is opened and the pump assembly placed in operation.
