A dental prophylaxis tool handpiece includes a motor section having a first connector; a sleeve section having a second connector with a first end extending over a portion of the motor section and engaging a prophylaxis tool at a second end; the first and second connector configured for engagement with each other and configured to limit relative axial movement of the sleeve section relative to the motor section while allowing for free rotational movement of the sleeve section relative to the motor section; and upon engagement of the sleeve section with the motor section, a portion of the motor portion is covered to substantially isolate the portion of the motor section from contaminants. Other embodiments incorporate a positive air pressure feature and/or an ozone generator. Associated methods of preventing contamination of at least a distal portion of a motor section of a prophylaxis tool handpiece are also described.

Prophylaxis tool handpiece

A combination includes a dental handpiece and a prophy angle. The dental handpiece includes a nosecone threadably connected to the dental handpiece. The prophy angle includes a proximal body that matingly attaches to the nosecone. A plurality of elongated torque members are formed on each of the prophy angle proximal body and the nosecone. Each of the torque members is a male torque member or a female torque member and each male torque member formed on one of the prophy angle proximal body and the nosecone matingly couples with a female torque member formed on the other of the nosecone and the prophy angle proximal body. The prophy angle, including the plurality of elongated torque members formed on the prophy angle, is formed to also be attachable to a known standard doriot-style nosecone. Other specific features of the handpiece and prophy angle are also disclosed.

An ablation tool includes a trocar and cannula with a hollow shaft. The hollow shaft is configured to permit passage of the trocar therethrough and has a proximal segment and a distal segment. The distal segment includes a distal tip aligned with the hollow shaft of the cannula to permit passage of the trocar within the hollow shaft of the cannula, and has tissue-adhering irregular surfaces protruding therefrom. An auxiliary port extends from an exterior surface of the cannula and defines a hollow passageway into the hollow shaft. Notably, an insert is provided as part of the tool. The insert defines a hollow shaft and is adapted to be inserted into the hollow shaft of the cannula and includes a diameter of less than an interior diameter of the hollow shaft of the insert so as to permit passage of a laser fiber through the hollow shaft of the insert. An auxiliary port extends from an exterior surface of the insert defining a hollow passageway into the hollow shaft of the insert.

A dental mirror includes a handle having a lumen, a mirror housing attached to the handle, a mirror cartridge for insertion through a cartridge opening of the mirror housing, a drive shaft rotatably held within the handle, and a film-roller rotatably attached to a film-roller bearing. The mirror cartridge includes a base, a film-roller bearing connected to the base, a film support structure connected to the base, and a film surrounding the film support structure. A distal end of the drive shaft and a proximal end of the film-roller are rotatably linked such that a rotation of the drive shaft rotates the film-roller causing the film to move relative to the film support structure.

A dental system comprises a dental prophy angle and an adjustable angle adapter. The prophy angle includes a housing and a guard with a concave inner surface. The adapter is configured to drive the prophy angle and the adapter includes a body, a nose, and an outer joint. The nose is configured to receive a portion of a prophy angle. The body is adjustably connected to the nose. The outer joint includes a ball portion connected to the nose, and a ball receiver positioned on the body. The ball receiver includes a first portion coupled to a first end of the body and a second portion attachable to the first portion. The nose is rotatable relative to the body into at least a first configuration and a second configuration. The concave inner surface of the guard engages a convex outer surface of the ball receiver.

An ablation cannula kit with insert includes a trocar and cannula with a hollow shaft. The hollow shaft is configured to permit passage of the trocar therethrough. An auxiliary port extends from an exterior surface of the cannula and defines a hollow passageway into the hollow shaft. Notably, an insert is included in the kit. The insert defines a hollow shaft and is adapted to be inserted into the hollow shaft of the cannula. An auxiliary port extends from an exterior surface of the insert defining a hollow passageway into the hollow shaft of the insert. Finally, a laser fiber is included with a diameter less than an interior diameter of the hollow shaft of the insert so as to permit passage of the fiber through the hollow shaft of the insert.

An adjustable angle adapter for a prophy angle comprises a nose, a rotating member, a body, a shaft, a multi-axis rotation joint, and an outer joint. The nose is configured to receive a portion of the prophy angle. The rotating member is positioned within the nose. The body is adjustably connected to the nose. The shaft is positioned within the body. The multi-axis rotation joint connects the shaft to the rotating member. The outer joint includes a ball portion connected to one of the body and the nose, and a ball receiver connected to an other of the body and the nose. The nose is configured to pivot relative to the body into at least a first configuration and a second configuration.

The present invention provides a dental prophylaxis angle that includes a housing, a rotor disposed in the housing, and a drive shaft driving the rotor. The drive shaft and the rotor operate together with a sidewall of the housing against a common surface of the rotor to prevent removal of the rotor from the housing in a direction along an axis of rotation of the rotor.

An adjustable angle adapter for a prophy angle comprises a nose, a rotating member, a body, a shaft, a pivot, and a multi-axis rotation joint. The nose is configured to receive a portion of a prophy angle. The rotating member is positioned within the nose. The body is adjustably connected to the nose. The shaft is positioned within the body. The pivot connects the body to the nose and includes a groove configured for a ball bearing that is passed through a channel formed within the pivot and the body. Also, the channel is parallel to the rotational axis of the shaft. The multi-axis rotation joint connects the shaft to the rotating member. The nose is rotatable relative to the body into a first configuration and a second configuration.

A dental tool including a dental prophy angle and a dental prophy angle adapter is provided. A dental prophy angle includes a housing and a rotor. The dental prophy angle adapter can include a drive shaft with a tip. The drive shaft of the adapter can be coupled to a gear at the same end of the tip with the rotor of the prophy angle being configured to receive the tip. Further, a slidable sleeve can extend over a portion of the drift shaft so that the slidable sleeve becomes automatically retracted upon engaging a shoulder of the housing resulting in the gear of the drive shaft being positioned beyond the end of the slidable sleeve.

A dental system comprises a dental prophy angle and an adapter. The prophy angle includes a housing and a latch mechanism. The adapter is configured to drive the prophy angle. The latch mechanism includes a lever and a first latch element, which are both defined by a pair of opposing U-shaped slots within the housing, such that free ends of one of the pair of opposing U-shaped slots are disposed between free ends of the other of the pair of opposing U-shaped slots. The adapter includes a nose having a second latch element and a depression proximate to the second latch element. Upon the first latch element mating with the second latch element, the depression is positioned adjacent the lever.
