A routing screen is presented on an electronic device by a user interface application in response to receiving a notification that an external audio device is connected to the electronic device. The routing screen displays representations of an internal audio device and the external audio device. In one aspect, the representations are buttons. In another aspect, the representations are entries in a list. If a user selects one of representations, the user interface application causes the audio signals to be routed to the audio device represented by the selection. An application control screen having a set of objects that represent functions for an audio application may also be displayed. One of the objects on the application control screen is modified in response status changes in the external audio device. A user may select this object to access the routing screen when the external audio device is connected.

Dynamic routing of audio among multiple audio devices

Animated indicators monitor the state of a software container and reflect the state of the container, potentially including information such as amount, type, and activity of the container. As the state of the container changes, an animation routine accordingly changes. Users are presented with up-to-date and detailed information about a container represented by a small graphic pictorial. Thus, the user receives a continuous supply of useful information about the container without having to specifically select and view the container as a full screen representation.

Animated indicators that reflect function activity or state of objects data or processes

Graphical user interface and computer program products are disclosed for providing a unique user interface that allows a GUI developer significant flexibility and strength in designing a layout for an application user interface in a Java&trade; environment. This is done while keeping the process for the developer simple and efficient. The developer can &ldquo;drag and drop&rdquo; components from a palette to a container. Once in the container, the developer can specify row and column types and attachment/alignment options for the component. This can be done using a simple icon set. The developer can also dynamically add new rows and columns to the layout design. Adjustments to the position and size of a component are made automatically and numerous row and column types can be specified.

A method and system for generating improved command progress indicator including the steps of establishing at a location of a display at least one computer-generated graphic indicator associated with at least one computer executable operation in a first-state appearance, the graphic indicator having a first-state appearance and a dynamic second-state appearance, signaling the computer to conduct an operation, altering the appearance of the computer-generated graphic indicator from the first-state appearance to the dynamic second-state appearance while the computer is conducting the operation, and restoring the appearance of the computer-generated graphic indicator from the dynamic second-state appearance to the first-state appearance when the computer has completed the operation. An embodiment of the invention uses a button graphic as the computer-generated graphic indicator and further comprises the steps of establishing a cursor on the video display, positioning the cursor on the button graphic using a cursor control device, selecting the button graphic for signaling said computer to conduct the associated operation. When the button graphic is clicked and the computer begins executing the associated operation, the appearance of the button graphic will become a dynamic second-state appearance comprising the repeated steps of adding and subsequently removing a highlight color from the first-state appearance of the button graphic at predetermined intervals. Alternatively, the appearance of the button graphic could become an animated graphic superimposed upon a background comprising a version of the original icon graphic.

Method and system for generating improved progress indicators

A method for expanding and contracting a window panel to uncover the panel's content to the user without resize other panels and without reformatting their content, is described. A user chooses a window panel by moving a pointer to that panel. If there is content in that panel not shown to the user, the panel expands to show the entire content. If expansion is not necessary initially, the system waits to see if any actions by the user require expansion. Upon expansion at any stage, portions of neighboring window panels are covered instead of the neighboring panels contracting and reformatting their content. Once the pointer is moved out of a window panel, the panel contracts to its default or original size and the expansion process occurs for a newly entered panel. Also described is the process of determining the maximum expansion size of a window panel and the 'rolling out' and 'rolling in' characteristic of the expansion and contraction process.
