An assembly for an exhaust bypass valve of a two-stage turbocharger can include a first turbocharger stage; a second turbocharger stage; an exhaust bypass valve that includes an open state and a closed state; an actuator; and a linkage mechanism that links the exhaust bypass valve to the actuator where the linkage mechanism includes a spring-biased linkage with a preset load where, in the closed state of the exhaust bypass valve, an axial length of the spring-biased linkage increases responsive to application of a load by the actuator that exceeds the preset load.

An assembly for an exhaust bypass valve of a two-stage turbocharger can include a first turbocharger stage; a second turbocharger stage; an exhaust bypass valve that includes an open state and a closed state; and a linkage mechanism that links the exhaust bypass valve to an actuator where the linkage mechanism includes a locked state for the closed state of the exhaust bypass valve.

A turbocharger includes a variable turbine nozzle defined between a nozzle ring and a pipe flange, and having a plurality of circumferentially spaced vanes rotatably mounted on the nozzle ring such that the vanes are pivotable. Each vane includes an airfoil section and a disk section rigidly affixed to an end of the airfoil section, the disk section being disposed against a face of the pipe flange, each disk section having a plurality of perforations extending axially therethrough. The pipe flange has a corresponding number of holes for each disk section of the vanes, the holes being positioned such that as each vane is rotated the perforations in the disk sections and the holes in the pipe flange of the insert become aligned in some positions of the vanes, allowing exhaust gas to pass between the nozzle and a space on an opposite side of the pipe flange from the nozzle.

A turbocharger has an annular bypass valve disposed in an annular portion of a bypass passage of the turbine housing. The turbine housing defines an exhaust gas chamber having separate half-annular first and second scrolls, and a portion of the bypass passage is sector-divided by a pair of dividing walls that create two 180-degree bypass sectors respectively connected to the first and second scrolls. Each dividing wall has a through-hole. The valve rotor defines a pair of valve members that close the through-holes when the bypass valve is fully closed. When the valve rotor begins to rotate toward an open position, first the valve members open the through-holes to connect the two bypass sectors, and then the bypass flow passages begin to open.

An assembly can include a compressor backplate; a bearing boss that extends axially from the compressor backplate and that includes an outer surface and male coupling features disposed along the outer surface; and a casing that includes a compressor end, a bearing boss opening at the compressor end, a turbine end, an inner surface located between the compressor end and the turbine end and female coupling features disposed along a portion of the inner surface, the male coupling features and the female coupling features configured to couple the bearing boss to the casing. Various other examples of devices, assemblies, systems, methods, etc., are also disclosed.

Turbocharger center housing

A centrifugal compressor for a turbocharger includes an inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for the compressor, operable to move between an open position and a closed position in the air inlet. The inlet-adjustment mechanism includes a variable-geometry conduit comprising a plurality of vanes that in the closed position collectively form a converging inlet member having a trailing edge inner diameter that is smaller than an inner diameter of the shroud surface of the compressor housing at the inducer portion of the compressor wheel such that an effective diameter of the air inlet at the inducer portion is determined by the trailing edge inner diameter of the variable-geometry conduit. The vanes in the open position are pivoted radially outwardly so as to increase the trailing edge inner diameter of the inlet member and thereby increase the effective diameter of the air inlet at the inducer portion.

A variable-vane assembly includes a generally annular nozzle ring and an array of vanes rotatably mounted to the nozzle ring and connected to a rotatable actuator ring, and an insert having a tubular portion structured and arranged to be sealingly received into a bore of a turbine housing and having a nozzle portion extending generally radially out from one end of the tubular portion, the nozzle portion being axially spaced from the nozzle ring such that the vanes extend between the nozzle ring and the nozzle portion. A ring-shaped wire cage is disposed radially outwardly of the vanes and has one axial end rigidly affixed to the nozzle ring and an opposite axial end rigidly affixed to the nozzle portion so as to fix a spacing between the nozzle ring and the nozzle portion in an axial direction of the variable-vane assembly.

Turbocharger and variable-nozzle assembly therefor

A variable-nozzle turbocharger includes a turbine housing and a center housing, and a generally annular nozzle ring and an array of vanes rotatably mounted to the nozzle ring such that the vanes can be pivoted about their axes for regulating exhaust gas flow to the turbine wheel. The vanes extend between the nozzle ring and an opposite wall formed by an insert in the turbine housing. A vane sealing member is supported on the insert, and has a portion disposed between distal ends of the vanes and the insert. This portion of the vane sealing member is configured to be contacted by the distal ends of the vanes when the vanes are in the closed position, while a clearance exists between the portion of the vane sealing member and the distal ends of the vanes when the vanes are in the open position.

Turbocharger variable-nozzle assembly with vane sealing arrangement

A variable-nozzle assembly for a turbocharger includes a generally annular nozzle ring and an array of vanes rotatably mounted to the nozzle ring such that the vanes can be pivoted about their axes for regulating exhaust gas flow to the turbine wheel. A unison ring engages vane arms that are affixed to axles of the vanes, such that rotation of the unison ring causes the vanes to pivot between a closed position and an open position. The vanes have proximal ends that are adjacent a face of the nozzle ring. A vane sealing member is supported on the nozzle ring and has a portion disposed between the proximal ends of the vanes and the face of the nozzle ring. The unison ring includes cams that engage cam followers. Rotational movement of the unison ring causes the cam followers to be moved axially and thereby urge the vane sealing member against the proximal ends of the vanes.

An exemplary multi-piece bearing for a turbocharger includes a cylindrical piece that has a coefficient of thermal expansion, opposing ends and an outer surface and an inner surface that extend between the opposing ends where the outer surface includes one or more lubricant openings; an end piece that has a different coefficient of thermal expansion and a face where the face includes one or more lubricant openings; and lubricant passages formed by the cylindrical piece and the end piece for passage of lubricant between the one or more lubricant openings of the outer surface of the cylindrical piece and the one or more lubricant openings of the face of the end piece. As described herein, such an exemplary multi-piece bearing can, upon selection of coefficients of thermal expansion, help maintain axial clearances between various components during operation of a turbocharger. Other exemplary bearings, arrangements and methods are also disclosed.
