A method for transmitting a coherent optical data signal includes receiving a data signal from an interface, and encoding the data signal with a forward error correcting (FEC) encoder according to a mix of modulation formats. The FEC encoder generates an FEC encoded signal which is used to generate modulation symbols according to the modulation formats. The FEC encoded signal of modulation symbols is spectrally shaped to generate a shaped signal, and pre-distorted before transmission. The shaped signal is pre-distorted by adding a predetermined amount of chromatic dispersion to generate a smoothed signal, and the smoothed signal is transmitted according to the modulation formats.

Optimization of optical transmission capacity

A system for measuring a length of one or more spans between a first optical transceiver and a second optical transceiver in a fiber-optic network, which can determine, at a processor associated with the first optical transceiver, a round-trip time of an optical signal communicated from the first optical transceiver to the second optical transceiver and back to the first optical transceiver. The system can also determine, at the processor, a half-round-trip time by dividing the round-trip time by two. The system can also determine, at the processor, a distance between the first and the second optical transceivers by multiplying the speed of light by the half-round-trip time.

Fiber length measurement system

Presented herein are sub-sampled carrier phase recovery techniques. In accordance with one example, a plurality of consecutive symbols associated with a received optical signal is obtained. Carrier phase recovery of the optical signal is performed using one or more carrier phase estimation stages. At each of the one or more carrier phase estimation stages, a subset of the plurality of consecutive symbols is selected for use in carrier phase estimation. The subset of symbols selected for use in carrier phase estimation at each of the one or more stages comprises symbols that provide the most phase recovery information for each of the one or more stages.

Sub-sampled carrier phase recovery

An apparatus and methods for generating multi-level output signals for use by an optical modulator are provided. The apparatus comprises a plurality of input signal lines each configured to receive a binary input signal, an output signal line and a plurality of amplifier stages. The amplifier stages are each connected between one of the input signal lines and the output signal line so as to each produce an output voltage on the output signal line of either a first level or a second level. The level of the output voltage is based on the binary signal at the respective input signal line, and the output voltages of the respective plurality of amplifier stages collectively produce a summed analog output voltage on the output signal line at two or more different levels each configured to drive an optical modulator.
