Methods and systems for managing a security system are described. A security server located external to a premises may be in communication with a security system and a gateway device located at the premises. A status signal may be sent to the security server. The status signal may be initiated based on an alarm event. If the security server fails to detect a message of the status signal, the security server may send one or messages indicating the failure.

Example methods may include determining an authentication code and sending a signal associated with the authentication code from an electronic device to a server via a connected device. Example methods may include determining an authentication code by a server or a second electronic device and requesting signal information from the server corresponding to the signal associated with the authentication code.

A device-communication system may receive, from a user device via a first network, communication data originating from a first device connected to the user device via a second network having a type different from that of the first network. A gateway of the security system may receive the request and determine if the client device is able to support encryption. The gateway may select a protocol with which to transmit the video data to the client device according to a priority attribute of the protocol and the capability of the client device to support encryption. The video data may be sent to the client device via the selected protocol.
