The high spin golf club uses modified grooves for use on all types of known golf clubs, wherein the modified grooves maximizes control of the golf ball through increasing backspin. The high spin golf club's modified grooves can be used alone or in a combination with conventional grooves to tailor the properties of the club face. The modified grooves are of varied configurations and all modified grooves can be used in combination with any other modified or conventional grooves to maximize the backspin of the golf ball and tailor the spin properties of the face of the club. Further a method for making high backspin golf clubs that reduce cover damage of golf balls is disclosed.

The disclosed invention comprises a novel golf club head and method of manufacturing the golf club head. The golf club head comprises a multilayer construction having a soft nickel alloy core and a hard chrome coating. The process used to produce the golf club heads involves an investment casting process in which the soft nickel alloy core is cast and the hard chrome coating is plated to the core. This multilayer design produces a golf club iron that is durable and consistent from iron to iron with feel characteristics which are generally equal to or better than traditional clubs formed from forged mild carbon steel.

A set of golf clubs which utilizes progressively longer hosel lengths for the purpose of enlarging the main body of the clubhead and/or redistributing weight within the main body of the clubhead. The hosel length progresses from a very short hosel (1 3/8') on the lowest lofted iron, (the number 1 iron), to a conventional length hosel (25/8') on the sand wedge. By reducing the length of the hosel, weight is made available that can be used to enlarge the size of the clubhead and/or redistribute weight within the main body of the clubhead.

A mechanical locking device for use in attaching the shaft of a golf club to the clubhead. An angle is cast inside the hosel at the base of the hosel bore. The tip of the shaft is cut at an angle matching the angle at the bottom of the hosel bore, such that when the shaft is inserted into the bore, there is no room for lateral movement or twisting of the shaft. This device eliminates the risk that the shaft will separate from the clubhead if the epoxy cement bond should break.

A golf club having a metal head provided with a hosel having an axial bore having a major diameter which includes a chamfered upper portion and a minor diameter which includes the remaining portion thereof. A shaft having an end diameter substantially conforming with the minor diameter, is located in the bore of the hosel. A ferrule made of a thermoplastic material having a modulus of elasticity of between 5-12 10.sup.2 MPa, is formed with an axial bore. A tapered sleeve extends from a lower portion of the ferrule. The ferrule is located in a press fit about the shaft end with the sleeve mattingly received within the major diameter of the hosel providing an extended cushion and reinforcement at the juncture between the shaft and the hosel.
