Provided are a viscosity modifier for lubricating oils for obtaining an additive composition for lubricating oils having excellent fluidity in a wide temperature range from low temperature to high temperature; and said additive composition for lubricating oils. Further provided are a viscosity modifier for lubricating oils for obtaining a lubricating oil composition capable of reducing viscosity in good balance in a wide temperature range from low temperature to high temperature; and said lubricating oil composition. The viscosity modifier for lubricating oils includes an ethylene &#x3b1;-olefin copolymer (A) which includes 30 to 50 mole % of structural units derived from at least one &#x3b1;-olefin selected from &#x3b1;-olefins having 4 and 5 carbon atoms and 50 to 70 mole % of structural units derived from ethylene (with the proviso that the total of all structural units of said copolymer is 100 mole %) and which satisfies specific requirements (a), (b), and (c).

Viscosity modifier for lubricating oils, additive composition for lubricating oils, and lubricating oil composition

It is an object to provide a lubricating oil composition having low-temperature properties and fuel efficiency at high temperatures which are superior to those of conventional lubricating oil compositions, and to provide a viscosity modifier for lubricating oils and an additive composition for lubricating oils which are used for obtaining said composition. The viscosity modifier for lubricating oils of the present invention comprises a propylene copolymer (A) which has a density of 875 kg/m3 or less and which comprises 60 mole % or more of structural unit derived from propylene.

The disclosed invention relates to a composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity, a hydrogenated copolymer of an olefin block and vinyl aromatic block, wherein the polymer is optionally functionalized, and a star polymer. Use of the composition as a lubricating composition is disclosed.

A lubricant composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity; (A) 0.05 to 1.5 percent by weight of a copolymer comprising 70 to 79 percent by weight of units derived from ethylene ('E'), having aof 50,000 to 100,000,/less than 3, density ('D') of 860 to 896 kg/m, and a melting point (&#x201c;T&#x201d;) of 15&#xb0; C. to 60&#xb0; C., wherein E and Tfulfill the expression3.44&#x2212;206&#x2267;;and (B) 0.05 to 1.5 percent by weight of a block copolymer comprising a first block which comprises a vinyl aromatic comonomer and a second block which comprises a diene comonomer, the diene monomer-containing block being hydrogenated; wherein the weight ratio (A):(B) is 20:80 to 60:40; exhibits good low temperature performance and durability.

Viscosity improver compositions providing improved low temperature characteristics to lubricating oil

The invention provides a lubricating composition containing an oil of lubricating viscosity and a hydrogenated copolymer of an olefin block and vinyl aromatic block, wherein the copolymer is optionally functionalized. The invention further provides a method for preparing a hydrogenated copolymer; and the use of the lubricating composition.

A mixture comprising A) a copolymer comprising from about 70 to about 79% by weight of units derived from ethylene, and having (a)measured by gel permeation chromatography employing polystyrene standard ranging from about 50,000 up to less than 130,000 and/or (f) SSI&#x2266;18; (b) density (D) ranging from about 845 to about 895 kg/m; (c)/less than 3; (d) melting point (T) measured by differential scanning calorimeter ranging from about 15&#xb0; C. to about 60&#xb0; C.; and (e) degree of crystallinity&#x2267;15%, and B) an amorphous polymer havingranging from about 130,000 to about 1,000,000 having degree of crystallinity&#x2266;5%. In one embodiment the density and the melting point of the copolymer A) fulfill the expression T&#x2266;1.247 D&#x2212;1037. In another embodiment, the percentage content (E: % by weight) of repeating units derived from ethylene and melting point (T: &#xb0; C.) of the copolymer A) fulfill the expression 3.44E&#x2212;206&#x2267;T. Also, additive concentrates and lubricating compositions comprising the components making up the mixture.
