A cantharimide compound may include the backbone of formula (1). R, R, R, and Rmay be independently selected from the group consisting of H, C(O)OR, C(O)R, C(O)NRR, NRC(O)R, N&#x2014;RR, O&#x2014;R, S&#x2014;R, P(O)(OR)(OR), As(O)(OR)(OR), SOR, SOR, and B(OR). Xto Xmay be independently selected from the group consisting of nitrogen and carbon, such that Xto Xare not all hydrogen. Y, Yand Rto Rmay be independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C-alkyl, -aryl, heteroaryl, and a bioactive polymer.
