The various embodiments include a near-eye display having a transmissive display and a diffractive micro-lens array. The transmissive display may be positioned relative to the diffractive micro-lens array so that the distance between the transmissive display and the diffractive micro-lens array is be approximately equal to focal length of the diffractive micro-lens array. The transmissive display may also be positioned relative to the diffractive micro-lens array so that a percentage of light emitted from the transmissive display is diffracted by the micro-lens array and collimated into focus on a retina of a human eye. The transmissive display may be further positioned relative to the diffractive micro-lens array so that light from a real world scene passes through transparent portions of the transmissive display and is diffracted by the micro-lens array out of focus of the human eye.

See through near-eye display

Natural-scene light is polarized so the light exiting the polarizer and entering a glass assembly has a first polarization. Light having a second polarization substantially orthogonal to the first polarization is launched into the glass assembly and directed normal to the glass assembly and into a zone plate assembly, along with the natural-scene light. A first plurality of electric fields is established in the zone assembly to form at least one zone plate that modulates the launched light without modulating the natural-scene light. The first plurality of electric fields is disestablished and a second plurality of electric fields is established in the zone plate assembly to reposition the at least one zone plate in the liquid crystal plate. Disestablishment and establishment of electric fields is repeated at a sufficient rate so that an image defined by a number of pixel spots formed on a retina is perceived by a viewer.

A method, an apparatus, and a computer program product for modulating optics in a display are provided. An apparatus forms a plurality of zone plates in a liquid crystal using electric fields. Each zone plate has a center, and the centers are aligned along a first axis of the display. The apparatus moves the plurality of zone plates in a first direction along a second axis of the display different from the first axis of the display, while maintaining alignment of the centers of the plurality of zone plates along the first axis. Such movement is provided through repositioning of electric fields through the liquid crystal.

A local feature descriptor for a point in an image is generated over multiple levels of an image scale space. The image is gradually smoothened to obtain a plurality of scale spaces. A point may be identified as the point of interest within a first scale space from the plurality of scale spaces. A plurality of orientation maps is obtained (from the plurality of image derivatives) for each scale space in the plurality of scale spaces. Each of the plurality of orientation maps is then smoothened (e.g., convolved) to obtain a corresponding plurality of smoothed orientation maps. Therefore, a local feature descriptor for the point may be generated by sparsely sampling a plurality of smoothed orientation maps corresponding to two or more scale spaces from the plurality of scale spaces.

In some embodiments, methods and systems are provided for assisting a user in determining a real-world distance. Hardware-based sensors (e.g., present in a mobile electronic device) may allow for a fast low-power determination of distances. In one embodiment, one or more telemetry-related sensors may be incorporated into a device. For example, data detected by a frequently-calibrated integrated accelerometer may be used to determine a tilt of the device. A device height may be estimated based on empirical data or based on a time difference between a signal (e.g., a sonar signal) emitted towards the ground and a corresponding detected signal. A triangulation technique may use the estimated tilt and height to estimate other real-world distances (e.g., from the device to an endpoint or between endpoints).

This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus related to electromechanical systems display devices. In one aspect, an apparatus includes a display assembly, a sensor, and a processor. The display assembly may include an array of electromechanical systems display devices. The sensor may be configured to provide a signal indicative of an illumination angle, a viewing angle, or both, with respect to a line perpendicular to the display assembly. The processor may be configured to receive the signal from the sensor, to determine the illumination angle and/or viewing angle, and to process image data to compensate for the determined illumination angle and/or viewing angle. In one implementation, the image data is processed to compensate for a shift in a wavelength of light reflected from at least one of the electromechanical systems display devices that would have occurred as a result of a non-normal illumination and/or viewing angle.

Methods, devices, and computer program products for robust estimation of color-dependent measurements are described herein. In one aspect, a method for generating a reference color grid that may be placed beside a color-dependent measuring device is disclosed. The reference color grid may contain a number of colors which enable a mapping from the color space of a testing device to a reference color space. This mapping may allow a function that is able to determine an estimate of a color-dependent measurement based on a color in the reference color space to be used. In another aspect, a method for robust estimation of color-dependent measurement using a reference color guide is disclosed.

Methods and devices are provided for reducing perceptible artifacts in a host content when the host contend is embedded with watermarks. In one method, a first segment of a host content that includes a first logical value is obtained. A second segment of the host content that includes a second logical embedded therein is also obtained. The second logical value is different from the first logical value, and the second segment is adjacent to the first segment of the host content. The host content at a boundary location of the first and the second segments is modified according to a transition function to suppress transitions in the host content at the boundary location caused by the different logical values embedded in the first and the second segments of the host content.

This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus for an electromechanical systems (EMS) device with one or more protrusions connected to a surface of the EMS device. In one aspect, the EMS device includes a substrate, a stationary electrode over the substrate, and a movable electrode over the stationary electrode. The movable electrode is configured to move to three or more positions across a gap by electrostatic actuation between the movable electrode and the stationary electrode. When the protrusions contact any surface of the EMS device at one of the positions across the gap, the protrusions change the stiffness of the EMS device. At least one of the surfaces in contact with the one or more protrusions is non-rigid. In some implementations, the protrusions have a height greater than about 20 nm.
