Disclosed is a method for decolorizing alkylated diarylamines, which have been made using aluminum chloride catalyst, by mixing and optionally heating the colored diarylamine with clay, then separating the decolorized diarylamine from the clay. Alternatively, the alkylated diarylamines, which have been made using aluminum chloride catalyst, may be decolorized by passing the diarylamines through a filter medium comprising clay.

Ortho-para-alkylated diphenylamines are prepared utilizing an improved, one-stage process wherein the diphenylamines are ortho-alkylated by reaction with a first olefin in the presence of an aluminum complex as the catalyst, and are subsequently para-alkylated by reaction with a second olefin using a Friedel-Crafts aluminum catalyst. The para-alkylation is carried out without prior isolation or solvent washing of the ortho-alkylated diphenylamine intermediates.

Process for otho- and para-alkylating diphenylamines

A composition useful in organic materials subject to degradation comprising a mixture of para-butylated and octylated, ortho-ethylated diphenylamines. The composition is liquid at ambient temperature, and is particularly useful as an antioxidant for rubber and latexes and petroleum based and synthetic lubricants.

Crude MBT is purified and substantially decolorized by treating same with an alkaline solution to form an MBT salt solution, measuring pH of the salt solution when adding the alkaline solution until an abrupt rise in pH is observed and stopping addition of the alkaline solution in response thereto, treating the salt solution with a solvent to extract solvent-soluble impurities, oxidizing the salt solution by introducing oxygen into an enclosed vessel containing the salt solution and vigorously agitating the solution until oxygen uptake essentially stops, diluting the salt solution with water, filtering the salt solution to remove precipitated impurities, and concentrating the solution.
