A chemical decontamination reagent containing a reducing agent, a reductive metal ion, and an inorganic acid is provided to remove a radioactive oxide layer on a metal surface. The reagent can dissolve the radioactive oxide layer on the metal surface effectively at a relatively low temperature and enables a simple process of contacting the reagent to the radioactive oxide, thus economically effective in terms of cost and time required for the process. Since the decontamination does not use a conventional organic chelating agent such as oxalic acid, but the reducing agent as a main substance, the residuals of the reducing agent remained after decontamination can be decomposed and removed with an oxidizing agent. Due to the easy decomposition with the chemical decontamination reagent, secondary wastes can be minimized and the radionuclides remained in the decontamination reagent solution can be removed effectively.

Chemical decontamination method using chelate free chemical decontamination reagent for removal of the dense radioactive oxide layer on the metal surface

A decontamination method that includes the steps of decontaminating an object containing radioactive contaminated metals or alloys with a chemical decontamination agent including sulfuric acid (HSO) and forming a Ba or Sr precipitate by adding a Ba or Sr cation and a hydroxylion or halogen anion salts to the decontamination waste water.

Decontamination method reducing radioactive waste

The present invention provides an oxidative decontamination reagent for removal of the dense radioactive oxide layer on a metal surface, which comprises an oxidizing agent, a metal ion, and an inorganic acid. The oxidative decontamination reagent of the present invention is characteristically prepared by adding a metal ion to the conventional oxidative decontamination reagent containing an oxidizing agent and an inorganic acid. When the oxidative decontamination reagent of the present invention is used, electric potential of the metal parts of the primary system of the nuclear power plant can be regulated as passive potential owing to the added metal ion during the oxidative decontamination of the primary metal part of the nuclear power plant. Therefore, by maintaining electric potential of the metal part as passive potential, local corrosion can be inhibited and at the same time secondary waste can be significantly reduced.

Oxidation decontamination reagent for removal of the dense radioactive oxide layer on the metal surface and oxidation decontamination method using the same

Disclosed is a method and device for collecting particulate contaminants removed using a COdecontamination medium from an early step of a decontamination process. The device removes particulate contaminants from a contaminated subject by a decontamination stream, and simultaneously forms another stream for collecting such contaminants into a collecting filter, thus preventing such contaminants from diffusing into the atmosphere. The device forms streams between the nozzles and the surface of the contaminated subject to readily move the nozzles along the surface of the subject without frictional resistance, to reduce the sense of fatigue of the operator. The method and device are advantageous in that when the device is readily used with a conventional COblasting decontamination unit to collect particulate contaminants, removal of particulate contaminants from a contaminated subject and collection of particulate contaminants contained in the decontamination stream are simultaneously performed, also allowing compressed gas blasted through air curtain blasting nozzles to prevent contaminated gas from diffusing into the atmosphere.

A method and an apparatus for electrokinetically decontaminating the soil contained in a radioactive waste drum are disclosed. The radioactively contaminated soil is put into drums, and the drums are carried to a temporary storage or to a disposal site. If the extremely low level radioactive soil is decontaminated rather than carrying the soil to the temporary storage or to a disposal site, and if the decontaminated soil is returned to the nature, then the limited storage capacity can be saved. Further, if a high level radioactive soil is treated to a low level one, and if thus a low level radioactive soil is stored in a storage, then the safety is improved. In the present invention, electrodes are buried into the contaminated soil contained in a radioactive waste drum, and a dc current is supplied, so that the radioactive nuclide and impurities can be removed by the electroosmosis and the electromigration. The anode includes: (1) at least 3 or more metal tubes made of titanium or zircaloy and having a diameter of 5 cm or less; (2) at least 6 or more metal rods made of stainless steel, titanium, or zircaloy; and (3) stainless steel sieves. The cathode is a tube made of carbon steel, stainless steel, or palladium, and has a diameter of 10 cm or less.
