A method of making a carbon fiber includes heat treating a lignin precursor absent an active ingredient in an inert atmosphere to raise the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the precursor by at least five (5%) percent, forming a lignin precursor having an increased Tg (High Tg Lignin). The High Tg Lignin can be spun into a fiber. The fiber may then be stabilized to form a thermoset fiber. The time period for stabilizing the fiber is less than one hundred (100) hours.

Method of making carbon fibers from lignin

A method of forming a graphitic carbon body employs compression and resistance heating of a stock blend of a carbon material and a binder material. During molding of the body, resistance heating is accompanied by application of mechanical pressure to increase the density and carbonization of the resulting preform body. The preform can then be subjected to a graphitization temperature to form a graphite article.

A method of processing light fraction tar includes pre-heating the light fraction tar before directing it through a reactor. The reactor has a top and a bottom and a surface spanning between said top and said bottom. A film of the light fraction tar flows down the surface under the force of gravity and with heated gas blowing thereon. The portion of the film that reaches the bottom of the reactor has improved properties making it more widely useful for carbon products.

A carbon foam evaporator is described which can be used in a wide variety of operating conditions. The evaporator utilizes a carbon foam with a bi-model pore distribution. The carbon foam is thermally stable up to temperatures of at least 300&#xb0; C., is rigid, and has a compressive strength of at least 100 psi. The carbon foam is also resistant to chemical attacks.
