Disclosed is a method and apparatus to provide for fingerprint minutiae matching using scoring techniques. A plurality of minutiae in a fingerprint image is defined. A score associated with each minutia corresponding to the validity of each minutia is estimated. The fingerprint image is then matched against one or more sample fingerprint images utilizing a partial point set pattern matching (PSPM) algorithm.

Architecture for processing fingerprint images

An Euler number representation of a binary image is calculated. The binary image is considered as a series of partial images. The Euler number for each partial image is calculated using properties of runs of zeros and ones in the pixel matrix, and the results are combined together. The operations may be performed sequentially or in parallel. The calculations may be performed using discrete logic components for on-chip VLSI implementations.

A method of encoding a watermark into a digital image. The method includes partitioning an original image into blocks and then determining a variance value of each block. The blocks are then arranged according to the variance values. A number of selected blocks are identified, where the number depends upon the size of the watermark. The blocks selected are then arranged by their location. Data from the watermark is used to replace bits in a representation of each of the selected blocks with data from the watermark. A method of decoding is also discussed.

Method of compressing an image

A Mahalanobis distance measure is used to identify a query image among plural images in a database. The measure may be used to rank the similarity of one or more images to the query image. A variance-covariance matrix is calculated for all images in the database. The variance-covariance matrix is used to calculate the Mahalanobis distance between the query image and one or more images in the database. A range tree may be used to identify likely image candidates for performing the Mahalanobis distance measurement.
