In one aspect of the present invention, a method for managing communications in a sensor network will be described. A coordinator device receives charging interval data from an energy harvesting sensor device. A sleeping interval for the sensor device is determined. A beacon frame is transmitted from the coordinator device to one more sensor devices in a network. The timing of the transmission is based at least in part on the sleeping interval data. The beacon frame may contain requests, commands or other data designated specifically for the sensor device. Various other aspects of the invention relate to the sensor device, the coordinator device and/or their operations.

The synchronization frame is received at the receiver which determines a receiving time comprising the receiver local time when said symbol of the synchronization frame was received at the physical layer of the receiver. Time synchronizing is performed by determining a difference between said timestamp and said receiving time, and adjusting the receiver local time based on said difference to time synchronize the receiver with the transmitter.

Uncompressed video information is transmitted over a wireless communication medium from a wireless sender device to a wireless receiver device. Progressive transmission data rate adaptation is performed on original uncompressed video pixel information. The progressive transmission data rate adaptation is performed on selected pixel information to obtain a rate-reduced pixel information. The rate-reduced pixel information requires a lower transmission data rate than the original frame. The rate-reduced pixel information is transmitted over the wireless communication medium to the wireless receiver device. At the receiver, a reverse operation is performed to recover the original uncompressed video pixel information.

A system and method for efficiently communicating messages over a low-rate channel between multiple devices in a system for wireless communication of uncompressed video is disclosed. The method includes various control bits in a beacon control field of a beacon frame to improve the efficiency of the beacon processing, thereby reducing beacon processing time and size of the beacon frame itself. The transmitting device can use one or more of the various control bits to indicate whether there are changes in various MAC payload information fields. The receiving station can use one or more of the control bits to eliminate the need to parse one or more MAC payload information fields whose values have not changed from the previous beacon frame.

A method and system for device discovery in a wireless network is provided. The device discovery involves directionally transmitting a data unit from a transmitting station over a channel in different directions to emulate omni-directional transmission, receiving the data unit transmissions from different directions at a receiving station, determining the quality of the transmissions received from the different directions, and detecting location information for the transmitting station relative to the receiving station based on the highest quality transmission among the transmissions received from the different directions. A system and method of training antennas for two devices having heterogeneous antenna configurations in a wireless network is disclosed. The method includes communicating one or more estimation training sequences between two devices via a phased array antenna and a switched array antenna, wherein a beamforming vector of the phased array antenna is switched between phase vectors within a set of weight vectors while the switched array antenna is switched within a plurality of antenna sectors. The method further includes tuning at least one of the phase array and switched array antennas with an antenna parameter selected based at least in part on the one or more estimation training sequences. The method further includes communicating data messages via at least one of the phase array and switched array antennas so tuned.
