In a mold in which a pattern is formed of a fine concavo-convex shape, two or more of alignment marks for determining a relative positional relation between a substrate and a mold are formed concentrically. Moreover, a damaged mark is identified from the positional information and shape of the respective marks, and an alignment between the mold and the substrate to which a resin film is applied is carried out excluding the damaged mark.

Pattern forming method and its mold

In a magnetic recording medium, there are realized an improvement in surface planarity and a reduction in characteristic degradation. The magnetic recording medium is fabricated so that the upper layer of a recording layer and a refill layer are formed of the same material.

Perpendicular magnetic recording medium

There is provided a method for fabricating a magnetic recording medium that provides high throughput, low manufacturing cost, and no degradation in accuracy in pattern size in fine pattern formation. A resist layer is formed on a substrate or cutting work layer. The surface of the substrate is divided into two or more areas using the center of rotation of the substrate as a reference point. An optical, contactless pattern transfer method is used to transfer a figure pattern contained in the divided area through a mask to the resist layer so as to form a latent image of the figure pattern. The pattern transfer is similarly carried out for the divided area. After the pattern transfer processes for all the divided areas are completed, the entire resist layer is developed to form a resist pattern. The resist pattern is used as a mask to cut the substrate or cutting work layer. As a result, there is provided the substrate or cut work layer onto which a fine pattern has been transferred.

Magnetic recording medium, method for manufacturing the same, and magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus

Embodiments of the invention provide ways to manufacture an inexpensive high-density magnetic recording medium. A high-density magnetic recording medium is composed of a flat substrate, a nonmagnetic intermediary body having a periodic recessed-relieved structure, and a magnetic film formed on the intermediary body.

Magnetic recording medium and method for production thereof

A read sensor is disposed near a main pole, thereby reducing the distance between the read sensor and a write sensor. In this case, however, a magnetic field generated from the main pole affects magnetization of a free layer and a pinned layer of a magnetoresistive film, thereby causing the magnetizing directions to rotate, a magnetic barrier to be generated, and the read property to be degraded. According to the present invention, a main pole and a yoke configure a magnetic circuit together with a sub-pole and a soft magnetic under layer of the magnetic disk and an exciting coil magnetizes the magnetic circuit, thereby a recording magnetic field is applied to a recording layer to record information bits on the layer. And in order to sharpen the magnetic field distribution generated by the main pole, a trailing shield made of a ferromagnetic material is disposed at the trailing side of the main pole adjacently. And a read sensor (magnetoresistive element) for reading bit information is provided between the trailing shield and the main pole.

Embodiments of the invention provide a magnetic recording and read head which reduces the spread read width in a narrow track having a width of 100 nm or less and shows stable read operation. In one embodiment, a side magnetic shield has a multi-layered structure including non-magnetic separate layers and soft magnetic layers, and the soft magnetic layers are magnetized in opposite directions to reduce a magnetic field induced by the side magnetic shield.

A magnetoresistive head and a fabricating method thereof accomplishing high sensitivity and low noise are provided even if track width narrowing makes progress. In one embodiment, a pinned layer includes a laminate which includes at least two magnetic layers and where adjacent magnetic layers are coupled antiferromagnetically to each other, and a mechanism to apply a longitudinal biasing field to a free layer is made to function by laminating a nonmagnetic separate layer/longitudinal biasing layer/antiferromagnetic layer connecting the free layer and opposite a nonmagnetic conductive layer (or nonmagnetic tunneling barrier layer). Controlling a magnetization direction of the longitudinal biasing layer which bears application of a longitudinal biasing field to the pinned layer and free layer is achieved by annealing carried out while applying a magnetic field in a track width direction and applying a magnetic field at room temperature.

In a side shield structure employed to narrow the effective track, a noise caused by the side shield structure can be reduced. In one embodiment, the side shield is inclined with respect to the film plane to suppress the generation of a magnetic pole in the end portion of the side shield. To this end, the side face of a device is inclined at a desired angle. Further, a reproduction device is formed at two or more angles &#x3b2;and &#x3b2;to improve the track width accuracy.

The present invention is directed to carrying out a high density magnetic recording to a material having a large coercive force by perpendicular magnetic recording head. By giving a patterning onto a soft magnetic under layer of a perpendicular two-layer recording media in sync with a period of a recording bit, a magnetic field from a write head can be allowed to converge to a soft magnetic column. Therefore, a magnetization reversal of the magnetic recording media material having a large anisotropic constant becomes possible, and then a high density magnetic recording can be achieved.
