A rotating crankcase ventilation system comprises a housing comprising an inlet and an outlet, a motor comprising a stator and a rotor, and a shaft. A first end of the shaft is coupled to the rotor and configured to rotate in response to rotation of the rotor. A filter element is coupled to the shaft. A sensor is configured to measure at least one operating parameter of the rotating crankcase ventilation system. A controller is operatively coupled to the sensor and the motor, the controller configured to receive the at least one operating parameter and selectively adjust operation of the motor to adjust rotation of the rotor, and thereby, the filter element based on the at least one operating parameter.

A gas-liquid separator comprises a housing comprising a first inlet structured to receive a blowby gas stream, the blowby gas stream having a first flow velocity, and a second inlet structured to a communicate a compressed gas into the housing, at least a portion of the second inlet disposed within the first inlet. An elastomeric nozzle is coupled to the first inlet and positioned around the second inlet, the elastomeric nozzle structured to combine the blowby gas stream with the compressed gas such that the compressed gas causes the blowby gas stream to flow at a second flow velocity that is greater than the first flow velocity. An impaction plate is disposed downstream of the elastomeric nozzle such that the blowby gas stream impacts the impaction plate and separates liquid and aerosol contained in the blowby gas stream.

A rotating separator includes a filter housing extending axially along a longitudinal axis and a filter element positioned within the filter housing. The filter element includes a first endplate and a second endplate operatively coupled to the first endplate, a first element core and a second element core positioned between the first endplate and the second endplate and configured to filter a contaminate from a fluid. An interior cavity is defined between the first endplate, the second endplate, the first element core, and the second element core. Fluid flowing through the filter element enters the interior cavity and is split between and flows in parallel through the first element core and the second element core.

Rotating coalescer elements that maximize the radial-projected separation surface area in a given (rotating) cylindrical volume, where flow to be cleaned is passing axially upward or downward through a separating media of the rotating coalescer element. Various example package assemblies are provided with various types of rotating configurations including cylindrical coiled media packs, frustum coiled media packs, concentric cylinders, coiled metal or polymer films with and without perforations, and/or alternating layers of different materials. The described rotating coalescers may be driven by hydraulic turbine, electric motor, belt, gear or by mounting on rotating machine components, such as rotating engine shafts or connected components.

A rotating crankcase ventilation filter element comprises a filter media comprising a plurality of filter media layers. A first end cap is positioned on a filter media first end. The first end cap comprises a first end cap main body, and a first plurality of indenting features positioned on the first end cap main body proximate the filter media first end. The first plurality of indenting features contact and indent corresponding segments of the filter media first end, causing the plurality of filter media layers to interlock at the corresponding segments. The interlocking prevents movement of the plurality of filter media layers relative to each other.

Anti-rotation features for crankcase ventilation filters

A separation assembly comprises a housing, a jet that expels a fluid within the housing, and a turbine positioned within the housing and positioned so as to be contacted by the fluid expelled from the jet. The fluid causes the turbine to rotate about a center rotational axis within the housing. The turbine comprises a first axial end, a second axial end, and a plurality of vanes extending axially relative to the center rotational axis from the first axial end to the second axial end. The plurality of vanes defines axially-extending channels between each of the plurality of vanes. The first axial end is axially open such that fluid can flow unblocked axially through the first axial end and into the channels. The jet is positioned such that at least a portion of the fluid enters into the turbine through the first axial end.

An axial flow element for use in a liquid separation system for an internal combustion engine includes a hub, a groove, a locking member, and a flat layer. The hub includes a cylindrical outer surface. The groove is disposed in the outer surface. The groove extends in a substantially longitudinal direction along the hub from a first end of the hub to a second end of the hub. The locking member is disposed in the groove. The flat layer is disposed between the hub and the locking member.

Methods of attaching a flat layer to a hub of an axial flow element

A rotating crankcase ventilation filter element comprises a motor comprising a stator and a rotor, and shaft. A first end of the shaft is coupled to the rotor and is configured to rotate in response to rotation of the rotor. A hub is disposed circumferentially around the shaft and coupled to the shaft such that the hub is rotationally locked with respect to the shaft. A filter media is disposed around the hub and secured thereto such that the filter media is rotationally locked with respect to the hub. The filter media is structured for axial flow of a gas through the filter media. A first end cap is disposed on a filter media first end, and a second end cap is disposed on a filter media second end of the filter media. The second end cap is coupled to the first end cap such that the filter media and the hub is secured therebetween.

Electric motor integrated rotating crankcase ventilation filter assemblies

A rotating coalescer having an ejected coalesced liquid separating device is described. The separating device prevents re-entrainment of liquid into a stream of filtered gas. The rotating coalescer includes a rotating filter element or coalescing cone stack positioned within a rotating coalescer housing. The outer surface of the rotating filter element or the outlet of the coalescing cone stack is displaced from the inner surface of the rotating coalescer housing. The gap between the rotating filter element or the coalescing cone stack and the rotating coalescer housing allows for ejected coalesced liquid, such as oil, to accumulate on the inner surface of the rotating coalescer housing for drainage and allows for filtered gas, such as air, to exit through a clean gas outlet of the rotating coalescer housing.

A rotating separator including a filter element extending axially along a longitudinal axis and including a first endplate, a second endplate, and a separating element. The first endplate includes a center tube. The second endplate is coupled to the first endplate and includes a central aperture having a perimeter and receiving the center tube. The filter element also includes an axially extending slot and an axially extending protrusion positioned on one of the first endplate and the second endplate and configured to engage with each other. The first and second endplates form an interior cavity when coupled together. The rotating separator includes a filter structure positioned within the interior cavity.

Rotating separator with single assembly orientation and integrated counterbalance

Rotating coalescer crankcase ventilation (CV) systems are described. The described CV systems utilize a pumping pressure created by the porous media of the rotating coalescer to maintain positive recirculation of filtered blowby gases through a potential leak gap between a static housing inlet and a spinning component of the rotating coalescer. In some arrangements, the porous media is fibrous media. The filter media may be pleated or non-pleated. The positive recirculation caused by the pressure balance prevents unfiltered blowby gases from bypassing the media of the rotating coalescer from the upstream side to the downstream side of the filter media through the gap. During operation, the pressure balance between the upstream side and downstream side of the filter media maintains the positive recirculation, which in turn maintains a high filtration efficiency.

Systems and methods for rotating coalescers maintaining positive recirculation through a dynamic seal

Referring to the figures generally, a rotating filter cartridge includes a first endcap, a second endcap, and a filter media. The filter media is positioned between the first endcap and the second endcap. The filter media creates a mechanical seal between at least one of the first endcap or the second endcap during rotation of the rotating filter cartridge without the use of a potting material. In at least one embodiment, the rotating filter cartridge further includes a body secured to the first endcap and the second endcap. At least one of the first endcap or the second endcap, and the body, may form a pocket that radially pinches the filter media to form the mechanical seal.
