In a system and method for providing data application-triggered call volume management, data application content is multicast to a plurality of wireless terminals, the data application content containing a voice call origination invitation. A high voice traffic warning is generated in response to the multicasting event, and resources are allocated for handling increased voice traffic in response to the high voice traffic warning.

Data application-triggered call volume management

Methods and systems for seamlessly broadcasting data to a user moving among a plurality of broadcast coverage areas. A first signal containing desired data may be received by a receiving device at a user location, wherein the first signal is broadcast from a first transmitting station associated with a first broadcast coverage. Thereafter, the receiving device (e.g., a radio or in-vehicle television) can be automatically instructed to search for and tune to a second transmitting station associated with a second broadcast coverage area broadcasting a second signal containing the desired data if the first signal fades at the user location, thereby permitting the user to seamlessly receive data as the user moves among a plurality of broadcast coverage areas. The receiving device can also be automatically instructed to search for and tune to a third transmitting station broadcasting a third signal containing data of a type associated with the desired data, if the second signal containing the desired program cannot be identified.

Follow-me broadcast reception method and system

In this invention, a wireless terminal location is monitored and used to locate providers of a requested service that are proximate to the location of the wireless terminal. At least one of the providers located is selected and identified by name and/or telephone number and/or the location, etc., and this information is delivered to and stored in the directory of the wireless terminal. The process is repeated as necessary to update the list of service providers when the wireless terminal is transported to a new location area. The service providers located can represent any category of service desired such as emergency facilities (especially in a foreign country) such as paramedics, hospital, police, or roadside assistance, etc.

Providing location based directory numbers for personalized services

The priority communication system provides the capability to restrict access to wireless communications services to emergency service personnel, such that their access to wireless communication services is not interruptible. This is accomplished by provisioning the cell sites of a wireless communications system to respond to at least one service priority grouping, with emergency service personnel being assigned a selected service priority by a centralized emergency services agency. The service priority coverage area and emergency service personnel assigned the service priority are defined on a dynamic basis by the centralized emergency services agency and are indicated by a priority call access code that is transmitted to the emergency service personnel. In order to ensure the proper operation of the priority communication system, the priority call access codes are maintained in secrecy to thereby enable emergency service personnel to have access to wireless communications facilities.

A system and method for providing data network-assisted conference service to a wireless terminal. Conference-related information is received from a conference originator and stored. Prior to conference establishment time, a conference notification message is sent to the wireless terminal. A conference connection request is sent by the wireless terminal in response to the conference notification message, and a conference connection is established between the wireless terminal and a conference bridge that connects all conference participants.

Data network-assisted conference establishment

A method is provided for administering a game over a wireless telecommunications network () serving a number of mobile terminals (). The wireless telecommunications network () includes a number of base stations () providing wireless communication coverage for corresponding geographically defined cells (). The method includes: establishing a game offering in response to a triggering event; designating a region in response to the established game offering; locating mobile terminals () within the designated region; sending over the wireless telecommunications network (), to mobile terminals () within the designated region, an invitation to participate in a game in accordance with the established game offering; and, collecting over the wireless telecommunications network (), from mobile terminals () to which the invitation was sent, responses to the invitation, the responses indicating that the invitation to participate in the game has been accepted or declined.

Location-based ad-hoc game services

Prepaid accounts are replenished during multimedia sessions using the prepaid accounts without interruption of the multimedia sessions. A prepay server monitors and adjusts prepaid account balances based on usage of communications resources as reported by elements of the communications network (). If a processor determines that an account balance is low, then a user terminal () is notified and a new session is intiated to permit the user to increase the account balance without interrupting the ongoing communications session.

Replenishment of prepaid accounts during multimedia sessions

A system and method for providing dynamic call disposition service to a wireless terminal that may be occupied or unoccupied. In response to a call to the wireless terminal in a voice domain, call disposition options are provided to the wireless terminal in a data domain. A call disposition action is then taken according to an option selection made at the wireless terminal as part of a cooperative effort between resources in the voice and data domains.

System and method for providing dynamic call disposition service to wireless terminals

In a multimedia communications system (), a conference establishment server coordinates the scheduling of a conference call. The server receives request for conference calls (). The request includes a list of participants and may include an indication of the resources necessary and any rules for the conference call. The request may indicate critical resources or participants that are required for the call. Based on the request, the server determines a conference time and notifies participants of the time (). Prior to conference time, participants are reminded of the time and automatically connected to the call. The server may check the status of users on the telecommunications network to determine availability. If a critical participant or resource is unavailable at conference time, the conference may be cancelled with notification to the participants.

Targeted and intelligent multimedia conference establishment services

A system and method for remote activation of customized telecommunication services are provided for data network telephony subscribers in a data network. In response to a call originator placing a call to a terminating telephony subscriber in the data network, a telephony server routes the call according to custom telecommunication service instructions provided in advance by the telephony subscriber and stored remotely from the telephony subscriber's point of presence on the data network. The call originator may be a data network telephony subscriber or a subscriber in the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The telephony server preferably performs the call routing based custom telecommunication service instructions (along with the subscriber's network address) retrieved from a subscriber profile server that maintains a subscriber profile database. A registration server may be provided to forward a data network address assigned to the telephony subscriber to the subscriber profile server when telephony service is invoked. Registration service may be provided on behalf of dial-up data network telephony subscribers in association with a network access server.

Seamless data network telecommunication service during mobile wireless call handoff

Computers that exchange data over communication networks frequently wait for responses to messages and therefor use timers to control the amount of time that the computer will wait for a response to a command issued over a network. Communication network responsiveness varies as traffic loading on the network changes. Fixed-value timers that don't take network loading into account can inadvertently terminate communications if a response is not timely received. Varying or adjusting data communication timers according to data network responsiveness can prevent erroneous data communication session termination.

Dynamic adjustment of timers in a communication network

A method and apparatus for establishing a connection to a customer telecommunications station, having Internet service, but not currently connected to the Internet. In response to receipt by the Internet of a call to that station, the station is located for the purpose of notifying the station of the call. If the called station is a wireless station, the paging message includes an indication that the page is for an Internet Protocol, (IP) telephone call. For wireline stations, other alerting techniques are used to indicate that a station is being called on an Internet call. In response to receiving the notification, the called station automatically logs on to the Internet, and is assigned a temporary Internet Protocol address, (IPA). A connection is then established between the access point of the caller on the Internet, and the access point of the called customer. Advantageously, an Internet subscriber need not be presently connected to the Internet to receive IP telephone calls.

Internet protocol telephony

A system and method provide seamless data network telecommunication service to a mobile wireless node during mobile wireless call handoff from a first base station to a second base station. Prior to call handoff, communication content addressed to the mobile wireless node is routed to a first address for delivery to the mobile wireless node via the first base station. Upon initiation of the call handoff, the communication content is routed to a second address for delivery to the mobile wireless node via the second base station. At the same time, routing of the same communication content is continued to the first address. Upon completion of the call handoff, communication content routing to the first address is terminated.

A Network Address Translator (NAT) processes multi-media calls between an H.323 multi-media terminal and the same H.323 multi-media server of many H.323 multi-media servers. By using the values of the TCP and UDP ports uniquely identifying the H.323 server responsible for processing a multi-media call, the NAT can calculate the identity of the proper transmission path to the same H.323 multi-media server.

Arrangement of delivering internet protocol datagrams for multimedia services to the same server
