Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may identify a group of cells available for cell selection or reselection, where the group of cells includes a first subset of cells that each have at least one capability (e.g., of a set of capabilities) and a second subset of cells. The UE may assign a relatively higher respective priority to each cell within the first subset of cells than each cell within the second subset of cells based on each cell within the first subset of cells having at least one capability. The UE may select a cell from the group of cells based on the respective priority and may attempt to camp on the selected cell. Additionally, the UE may store the assigned respective priorities in a data structure at the UE.

Capability-based cell prioritization for cell selection and reselection

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described in which a user equipment (UE) may establish a connection with a network entity and transition to an inactive state in which a security context associated with the connection between the network entity and the UE is maintained. The UE may determine, based on a presence of data for transmission via the connection while in the inactive state, that one or more parameters associated with the connection meet a threshold criteria, and transmit the data via the connection while in the inactive state. The threshold criteria may be, for example, a cell energy of a serving cell associated with the connection, and an amount of data to be transmitted may be below a size threshold associated with a small data transmission.

Small data transmission techniques in wireless communications

Various aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication and techniques to prevent frequent beam switching. In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) may determine a duration of time that the UE dwells on a beam. The UE may update a data structure, stored in memory of the UE, to add or modify a stored duration value associated with the beam based at least in part on determining the duration of time that the UE dwells on the beam. The UE may determine that a condition associated with the stored duration value is satisfied. The UE may modify a priority of the beam in connection with a beam selection procedure based at least in part on determining that the condition associated with the stored duration value is satisfied. Numerous other aspects are provided.

Preventing frequent beam switching

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may measure a power value for each beam from one or more cells and calculate an average beam power for each cell. The UE may transmit these calculated averages to a base station in a report, and the base station may select a cell for communications based on the measurement report. The UE may also include a number indicating how many beams are used when calculating an average beam power, a ratio between a maximum and minimum beam power for each cell, two average beam powers based on two defined thresholds, or a combination of these measurements, in the transmitted report. The UE may add a bias to the average beam power for a particular cell to indicate a preference for that cell over the other candidate cells.

Cell quality measurement reporting for cells with mismatched beam numbers

Certain aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication. In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) may configure a cycle length of an extended discontinuous reception (eDRX) cycle, and may determine whether the UE is in a condition, associated with triggering a tracking area update, during an on duration of the eDRX cycle. The UE may selectively increase or decrease the cycle length of the eDRX cycle based at least in part on determining whether the UE is in the condition. The cycle length may be decreased when the UE is in the condition or may be increased when the UE is not in the condition. Numerous other aspects are provided.

Techniques and apparatuses for configuring an extended discontinuous reception cycle

A method and apparatus for efficiently performing measurements during a connected mode in a wireless communication system is disclosed. For example, the method and apparatus may include receiving, at a user equipment (UE), a Radio Resource Control (RRC) Reconfiguration message including a plurality of measurement objects from a network entity to identify frequencies during a measurement procedure; receiving, at the UE, one or more neighbor discovery expression messages, each neighbor discovery expression message including a neighbor measurement object and being received from a respective neighbor UE; determining, by the UE, whether the plurality of measurement objects of the RRC Reconfiguration message satisfy a measurement capability threshold; selecting, by the UE, a portion of the plurality of measurement objects of the RRC Reconfiguration message; and performing, by the UE, the measurement procedure for each measurement object of the portion of the plurality of measurement objects.
