The present invention generally relates to sanitary absorbent articles and in particular to disposable feminine sanitary absorbent articles that are extremely thin, highly absorbent and have superior structural integrity properties.

Ultra-thin absorbent article

A process for manufacturing robust, flexible sheet-like material, includes the steps of a) applying a waxy composition to the web to form a waxed web; b) leading the waxed web via at least one roller to a chiller; c) cooling the waxed web; and d) leading the waxed web to a collection station for collecting the waxed web for further processing. The waxy composition comprises about 10-60 wt-% of a waxy compound and about 90-40 wt-% of a diluent. The waxy compound is selected from the group consisting of A) monoesters of a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol and a fatty acid; B) diesters of a polyhydric aliphatic alcohol and a fatty acid; and C) mixtures of said monoesters and diesters. The coating forms a stable liquid mixture at a temperature between about 35&#xb0; C. and about 100&#xb0; C., has a liquefaction temperature of at least about 30&#xb0; C., and has a contact angle with a flat surface of the substrate of less than about 35&#xb0; when measured at a temperature of 60&#xb0; C.

The application of active ingredients, exemplified by GML, to absorbent fibers, such as rayon fibers, used in tampon manufacture at very low levels has been found to maintain efficacy in the inhibition of the production of toxic shock syndrome toxin one (TSST-1) produced bywithout overtly killing the microorganism to achieve the desired reduction while avoiding undesired test results that suggest the presence of 'impurities' in some jurisdictions.

The additive combination provides surprisingly improved fluid transfer across the cover. It can also provide a benefit by reducing frictional forces during the manufacture of a tampon.

Apertured plastic films comprise a stretchable thermoplastic polymeric material having a plurality of micro-holes defined by a network of fiber-like elements. The films are produced by directing fluids, especially water, against the upper surface of a starting film in the form of columnar streams in a contact zone, while the film is supported on a backing element. The films of the invention are useful as covering materials for absorbent products such as diapers, wound dressings and sanitary napkins.

Textile-like apertured plastic films

An apparatus for producing an apertured plastic film having a tricot-like texture. The apparatus includes a film forming member comprising a rotatable hollow drum having a pattern of apertures and a topographical outer surface formed by a cluster of peaks and valleys surrounding each aperture. A plastic film is placed on the apices of the peaks and fluid streams are projected against the film while the drum is rotated. The fluid forces the film against the topographical outer surface of the drum causing the film to become apertured and to have a tricot-like texture corresponding to the pattern of apertures and peaks and valleys.

A disposable absorbent article comprises an absorbent panel and a backing web secured to the panel. A preferred form of the web comprises an apertured film. The web may also include other components on the apertured film, including adhesive. The apertured film is preferably produced from a solid precursor film. The precursor film comprises a copolymer of ethylene and a comonomer polymerized using a single-site metallocene-type polymerization catalyst. The apertured film is formed from the precursor film so that the apertured film has localized deformations and apertures therein. The apertured film exhibits breathability, strength, and flexibility with an elasticity accommodating stretch or elongation and at least partial recovery.

There is provided by this invention a least three integrated regions, each region having wherein the density and fluid affinity of the composite continuously increases from top to bottom thereby facilitating effective fluid transport and efficient utilization of storage capacity. An additional layer of SA and tissue may be provided to the absorbent product to provide an absorbent structure with dry feel and low stain. Methods of forming integrated, multi-layered absorbent composites and structures comprising at least three regions wherein each region has distinct density and fluid affinity gradients and wherein the density and fluid affinity of the composite continuously increases from top to bottom, are also provided herein.
