The Expert System 10 may operate in any of three modes: manual, wherein tests must be approved by or directed by an operator; automatic, where tests are run automatically without operator intervention; and semiautomatic, where operator approval is required for certain tests such as interruptive tests and other tests such as non-interruptive tests may proceed without operator intervention.

Semi-automatic mode of network design

Expert information is entered using a user friendly User Interface which reduces need for the participation of a Knowledge Engineer. The User Interface including a template for entering a plurality of attributes for a hypothesis tree node. Among the attributes are an identifier for identifying a second node connected to the hypothesis tree node by a branch of a hypothesis tree. If the second node has not been defined, it is added to and displayed in a list of undefined nodes. Once all attributes for a template are completed, an identifier for the hypothesis tree node is added to and displayed in a list of defined nodes.

Expert system for communications network

A wireless data communications network utilizes a frequency synthesizer to achieve a systematic frequency hopping arrangement wherein frequency is incremented by two times the channel spacing from lowest frequency to highest frequency. When adjusting the frequency from highest frequency to lowest frequency a one times the channel spacing frequency hop is utilized for the first and half and last hop and two times the frequency spacing is utilized otherwise. In this manner, alternating frequencies are selected so that the same frequency is only utilized once during any complete cycle and the size of frequency transitions is held to a minimum allowing a narrow bandwidth filter and inexpensive implementation of the phase locked loop portion of the synthesizer.
