The invention provides a buffer management apparatus coupled between a memory and a plurality of circuit blocks accessing the memory. In one embodiment, the buffer management apparatus comprises an arbiter, a plurality of buffers, and a multiplexer. The arbiter selects a plurality of owners for the buffers from the circuit blocks, passes a plurality of access request signals generated by the owners to the corresponding buffers, and delivers a plurality of access response signals retrieved from the corresponding buffers to the owners in reply to the access request signals. The multiplexer alternately retrieves the access request signals from the buffers to generate a memory access signal delivered to a memory controller of the memory, receives a memory response signal generated by the memory controller in reply to the memory access signal, and distributes the memory response signal to the buffers as the access response signals.

Apparatus and method for buffer management for a memory operating

A data processing system is disclosed. The system includes a processor, a transformer, a first memory buffer, a second memory buffer, a first filter, and a second filter. An obtained transmission signal symbol is first transformed to first data. The first memory buffer stores the first data. The processor obtains peak data based on the first data according to a predetermined threshold. The transformer transforms the peak data to second data and stores the second data in the second memory buffer. The first filter filters the second data to determine reserved data of the second data and removes the reserved data from the second data to generate third data. The transformer transforms the third data to fourth data and stores the fourth data in the second memory buffer. The processor merges the first and fourth data to generate fifth data. The second filter filters the fifth data based on the transmission signal symbol and a previously obtained transmission signal symbol.

Data processing method and system capable of reducing required memory

An error correction device is provided. When an error of an incorrect data group stored in a memory is detected, a memory controller of the error correction device executes a burst read, burst write or burst read-modify-write (RMW) operations to the memory instead of the conventional single read-modify-write (RMW) operation, thereby reducing the occupied bandwidth of the memory.

An optical storage medium recording apparatus is provided a data preparing and ECC encoding circuit that both prepares the data by combining different categories of data into data sequences in accordance with a data layout on the optical storage medium and encodes the combined data. The encoded data is temporarily stored in a data buffer, and subsequently successively read out by a recording circuit for recording onto the optical storage medium according to the data layout. For a Blu-ray disc recording apparatus, the data preparing and ECC encoding circuit includes a LDC/BIS encoder for generating long distance error correction codes (LDC) and burst indicator subcodes (BIS) from the combined data to form LDC and BIS encoded data, which is temporarily stored in the data buffer. The recording circuit includes an interleave circuit for interleaving the LDC and BIS data to form physical clusters for recording on the disc.

The method comprises storing additional data to a first temporary region of a memory device; reading the first recorded data from the optical storage medium and storing the first recorded data to the first temporary region; reading a data segment of the second recorded data from the optical storage medium and storing the data segment to a second temporary region of the memory device; reading the first recorded data from the first temporary region and the data segment from the second temporary region, and decoding the first recorded data and the data segment to confirm accuracy of the first recorded data; reading the first recorded data and the additional data from the first temporary region, and encoding the first recorded data and the additional data to generate encoded data; and writing the encoded data to the optical storage medium.

The present invention executes an encoding-like operation such as an interleaving operation to error flags during reproducing data from the optical disc, so as to obtain number and distribution of the errors on the disc.

A system for transferring data read from a data storage medium. The system comprises a memory unit, a controller, a memory management logic, and an output interface. The memory unit stores the data. The controller compares at least one address of the data with at least one defect address and generates a defect notification signal indicating the comparison result. The memory management logic calculates the amount of the data stored in the memory unit for transfer and generates a calculation signal according to the amount of the data and the defect notification signal received from the controller. A data managing method for an optical disc drive writing data into an optical disc having defects is provided. The optical disc has a user data area and a spare area. The optical disc drive includes a first buffering space and a second buffering space. The data managing method includes: when the first buffering space receives a data corresponding to a defect, not suspending the first buffering space from receiving the user data, and transferring the data, corresponding to the defect and in the first buffering space, to the second buffering space; and when data amount in the second buffering space reaches a predetermined value, suspending the optical disc drive from writing data in the first buffering space into the user data area, and driving the optical disc drive to write data in the second buffering space into the spare area.

Data managing method for an optical disc drive writing user data into an optical disc having defects

An error correction device is provided. When an error of a data group stored in a dynamic random access memory (DRAM) device is detected, a memory controller of the error correction device executes a burst read and write, burst write or burst read-modify-write (RMW) operations to the DRAM instead of the conventional single read-modify-write (RMW) operation, thereby reducing the occupied bandwidth of the DRAM.

Apparatuses and methods for defect replacement when an optical storage medium is read are provided. When the defect management is LOW, a pick-up head retrieves a set of data from the optical storage medium; a defect detector detects whether there is a defect in the set; if yes, a processor determines whether a replacement for the defect is in the set; and if yes, an interface transmits the replacement from the set. When the defect management is CRD, a buffer temporarily stores data retrieved from the optical storage medium; a defect detector detects whether there is a set of defects in the data; if yes, a comparator compares a length of the set of defects with a defect threshold length; a pick-up head reads more data from the optical storage medium continuously until the buffer reaches a buffer threshold if the length is compared shorter than the defect threshold length; and the pick-up head reads a set of replacements for the set of defects directly if the length is compared longer than the defect threshold length.

A method for defect management of a rewritable optical disc is provided. The rewritable optical disc has a data area comprises recording units for storing a target data and a replacement area comprising first replacement units for replacing defective recording units of the data area. First, a fragmented status of the target data is calculated, wherein the fragmented status reflects a dispersion level of the first replacement units in view of a distribution of the defective recording units. The fragmented status is then compared with a threshold value to determine whether to perform a defragment operation about the target data. Finally, the defragment operation about the target data is performed by rearranging the first replacement units in accordance with the sequence of the defective recording units.
