A user of a network-based system may correspond to a user profile that describes the user. The user profile may describe the user using one or more descriptors of items that correspond to the user (e.g., items owned by the user, items liked by the user, or items rated by the user). In some situations, such a user profile may be characterized as a 'taste profile' that describes an array or distribution of one or more tastes, preferences, or habits of the user. Accordingly, the user profile machine within the network-based system may generate the user profile by accessing descriptors of items that correspond to the user, clustering one or more of the descriptors, and generating the user profile based on one or more clusters of the descriptors.

User profile based on clustering tiered descriptors

An apparatus (a) groups descriptors into a cluster based on associating the descriptors with each of a first item and a second item, (b) accesses biometric data of a user, (c) determines a first activity of the user based on contextual data correlating the cluster with the biometric data, including determining whether the first activity represents an anomalous phase of the user based on a time period of the first activity being shorter than a threshold duration, and (d) generates a user profile based on the first activity of the user and the cluster, including (i) responsive to determining that the first activity represents the anomalous phase of the user, omitting a name of the cluster from the user profile, and (ii) responsive to a second activity of the user matching the first activity associated with the cluster, generating a recommendation including a third item based on the user profile.

Examples described herein may perform various operations based on mood congruency. An example method involves accessing, by a processor, from a database, a score that represents a degree of congruency between a first mood vector that describes first media data and a second mood vector that describes second media data, wherein the score is generated based on (i) a first value that the first mood vector associates with a first mood, (ii) a second value that the second mood vector associates with a second mood, and (iii) a degree of congruency between the first and second moods, based on the score, comparing, by the processor, a first characteristic of the first media data, other than the first mood, with a second characteristic of the second media data, other than the second mood, and based at least in part on an output of the comparing, providing an indicator to a module.

Methods and apparatus for determining a mood profile associated with media data

Examples described herein may perform various operations based on mood congruency. An example method involves accessing, from a database, a first mood vector that describes first media data and specifies an association between a first value and a first mood, accessing, from the database, a second mood vector that describes a second media data and specifies an association between a second value and a second mood, retrieving a first score that represents congruency between the first and second moods, the first score being retrieved from a data structure that correlates the first and second moods, using a processor, generating a second score that represents congruency between the first and second mood vectors, the generating the second score being based on the accessed first and second values and the retrieved first score, and, based on at least the generated second score, providing an indicator to a module.

Methods, apparatus, systems, and articles of manufacture are disclosed that involve a user profile based on clustering tiered descriptors. An example method includes grouping descriptors into a cluster of descriptors based on an association between the descriptors and each of a first item and a second item, accessing, via a user device, biometric data of a user, determining a first activity in which the user is engaged based on contextual data that correlates the cluster of descriptors with the biometric data of the user received from the user device via the network, generating a user profile based on the first activity of the user and the cluster of descriptors, and generating, in response to a second activity of the user matching the first activity associated with the cluster of descriptors within the user profile, a recommendation including a third item based on the user profile.

Examples described herein may perform various operations based on mood congruency. An example implementation accesses (i) a first mood vector that describes first media data and specifies a first mood-value pair, the first mood-value pair assigning a first value to a first mood and (ii) a second mood vector that describes a second media data and specifies a second mood-value pair, the second mood-value pair assigning a second value to a second mood. The implementation retrieves a first score that quantifies congruency between the first and second moods and generates a second score that quantifies congruency between the first and second mood vectors, the generating the second score being based on the accessed first and second values and the retrieved first score. Based on at least the generated second score, the implementation provides an indicator to an application.

A user interface generator is configured to access a media file that stores acoustic data representative of sounds. The user interface generator determines a mood category of the media file, based on a mood vector calculated from the acoustic data. The mood category characterizes the media file as being evocative of a mood described by the mood category. The user interface generator generates a user interface that depicts a grid or map (e.g., a 'mood grid' or a 'mood map') of multiple zones. One of the zones may occupy a position in the grid or map that corresponds to the mood category. The user interface may then be presented by the user interface generator (e.g., to a user). In the presented user interface, the zone that corresponds to the mood category may be operable (e.g., by the user) to perform one or more actions pertinent to the mood category.

In an embodiment, a method is provided for determining a mood profile of media data. In this method, mood is determined across multiple elements of mood for the media data to create a mood profile associated with the media data. In some embodiments, the mood profile is then used to determine congruencies between one or more pieces of media data.

In an embodiment, a method and apparatus for generating a presentation is provided. The method considers characteristics of audio works and visual works when constructing the presentation. In some embodiments, the presentation may be automatically constructed.

A method and a system for deriving visual rhythm from a video signal are described. A feature extraction module receives the video signal and extracts a two-dimensional feature from the video signal. A one-dimensional video feature computation module derives a one-dimensional feature from the extracted two-dimensional feature. A visual rhythm detector module detects a visual beat and a visual tempo from the one-dimensional feature.
