An AC-to-DC power adapter provides DC power to an information handling system at a first higher DC voltage or a second lower DC voltage based upon a power state of the information handling system. For example, approximately 19 Volts DC power is provided if the information handling system is in an on state or if the information handling system is charging a battery. Approximately 13 Volts DC power is provided if the information handling system is in a reduced power state, such as an ACPI S3 state, with a battery having a substantially full charge.

The disclosure provides a method for charging a battery in an information handling system. The method includes prompting a user to select from a plurality of charging modes for the battery, wherein the charging modes comprise a first mode, a second mode, or a third mode. The method further includes charging the battery in the first mode when the first mode is selected, wherein a charge voltage and a charge current are constant In the first mode, and charging the battery dynamically when the second mode or the third mode is selected, wherein the charge current changes dynamically based on a battery temperature.

The present disclosure relates to circuit protection within an information handling system and a media resource unit. In one form, an information handling system can include a first external input power port and an information handling system docking interface operable to be coupled to a media resource unit interface of a media resource unit. The media resource unit can include a second external input power port. The information handling system can also include a protection circuit including a first terminal and a second terminal. The first terminal can be coupled to the first external power port and operable to receive input power from the second external power port of the media resource unit. The second terminal can be coupled to the information handling system docking interface and operable to output protected power to the media resource unit interface.
