This invention provides a triggered response composition in the form of a barrier material and a delivery device that includes one or more polyelectrolytes in contact with an aqueous system that is stable and insoluble in an aqueous system and that exhibits one or more chemical/physical responses in the aqueous system, wherein the chemical/physical response of the composition is triggered upon one or more changes in ionic strength of the aqueous system.

The present invention relates to a process for preparing dry polymer granules having increased minimum ignition energy, lowered to unchanged maximum explosion pressure, lowered explosion strength (Kst) coupled with reduced dusting levels by drying a mixture including one or more emulsion polymers and one or more surfactants having HLB values between 10 and 25.

Process for manufacturing polymers

A method for improving the storage stability of personal care formulations containing ultraviolet (UV) radiation-absorbing agents (sunscreen agents) is disclosed. Latex polymer particles containing a void, having a particle size from 50 to 1000 nanometers, and having at least 4% polymerized crosslinker monomer units in the shell portion of the particle are especially effective in maintaining storage stability and effectiveness of sunscreen formulations when added to personal care compositions containing at least one sunscreen agent.

Method for preparing ultraviolet radiation-absorbing compositions

A method for improving the corrosion resistance of aerosol or foam hair spray formulations in metal containers is disclosed. In particular, the present invention involves the use of phosphate ester emulsifiers in the preparation of the emulsion polymer hair fixative resins to provide corrosion resistance of the hair styling composition in metal containers without negatively affecting the performance of the hair styling product itself. Use of the selected emulsifiers is particularly useful in non-corrosive aqueous hair styling compositions containing low (80% or less) volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations.

Method for inhibiting corrosion in an aqueous aerosol or foam hair styling composition

A method for enhancing the performance of hair fixative resins in hair styling compositions by using selected polymers having certain compositions is disclosed. In particular, the present invention involves a method of improving the stiffness performance of hair fixative resins by using polymers containing 5-95% (C,-C,)alkyl (meth)acrylate, 0-70% hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate, 0-50% monocarboxylic acid monomer and 1-25% dicarboxylic acid monomer. The selected polymers are particularly useful in aqueous hair styling compositions containing low (80% or less) volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations.

Stiff-feel hair styling compositions

Crosslinked poly(amino acids) useful as superabsorbent polymers and an improved process for preparing the crosslinked poly(amino acids) is disclosed. Use of polyaziridine and polyepoxide crosslinkers allows the production of superabsorbent polymers that is free of special handling steps required to process hydrogel materials using conventional preparation methods.

Crosslinked poly(amino acids) and method of preparation

Superabsorbent polymeric compositions are prepared from monomer including acrylic acid and an effective amount of a second hydrophilic monomer, which can be a soluble salt of beta-acryloxypropionic acid. Preferably, the pH of the aqueous monomer solution is adjusted to substantially exclude free acid, and the aqueous monomer solution is coated onto a heated surface to both polymerize the monomer and dry the resulting hydrogel. Free acid thermal degradation products are avoided and the superabsorbent product has greater absorption capacity than acrylate homopolymer.

Superabsorbent polymeric compositions and process for producing the same

There is disclosed a process of thickening an aqueous system comprising adding to the system aqueous dispersions of water-insoluble emulsion copolymers of (1) about 10-70% by weight of (meth)acrylic acid or itaconic acid, (2) about 0.5-25% by weight of an alkyl poly(oxyethylene) itaconate, and (3) at least 25% by weight, to a total of 100%, of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl (meth)acrylate, and, optionally, included in the total monomer mixture a small amount of (4) about 0.05-1% by weight of a polyethylenically unsaturated monomer. The copolymers, when neutralized and solubilized by addition of an alkali, are high efficiency thickeners for aqueous systems and have improved tolerance to ionic or electrolyte content. Typical systems that can be thickened are paint latices, cosmetic preparations, food preparations, ionic detergents, dye pastes for textiles, pharmaceuticals, and oil well drilling muds. Surfactants enhance the thickening properties afforded by the copolymers.

Process for thickening with copolymers of alkyl poly (oxyalkylene)

There are disclosed polymerizable alkyl poly(oxyalkylene) esters of an acrylate oligomer and copolymers thereof, especially stable, aqueous dispersions of water-insoluble emulsion copolymers of (1) about 10-70% by weight of methacrylic or acrylic acid, (2) about 0.5-25% by weight of an alkyl poly(oxyalkylene) ester of an acrylate oligomer, and (3) at least 25% by weight, to a total of 100%, of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl (meth)acrylate, and optionally, included in the total monomer mixture, a small amount of (4) about 0.5-1% by weight, of a polyethylenically unsaturated monomer. The copolymers, when neutralized and solubilized by addition of an alkali, are high efficiency thickeners for aqueous systems and have improved tolerance to ionic or electrolyte content. Typical systems that can be thickened are paint latices, cosmetic preparations, food preparations, ionic detergents, dye pastes for textiles, pharmaceuticals, and oil well drilling muds.
