An information handling system includes a power supply configured to provide a main power bus and a secondary power bus and a USB-C port. The USB-C port includes a connector that provides an internal power bus, an input selector that couples the internal power bus to the main power bus, and a controller that enables/disables the coupling of the internal power bus to the main power bus by the input selector, and selectively couple the secondary power bus to the internal power bus. The controller further determines that an over-voltage condition is exhibited on the first internal power bus, and, in response to determining the over-voltage condition, disables the first input selector from coupling the first internal power bus to the main power bus and uncouples the secondary power bus from the first internal power bus.

A power switch includes an OC detection circuit, a UV detection circuit, and an OC indication circuit. The OC detection circuit detects an over-current in the power switch, provides an OC flag in a first state when no over-current is detected, and provides the OC flag in a second state when the over-current is detected. The UV detection circuit detects an under-voltage in the power switch, and provides a UV fault indication in a third state when the under-voltage is not detected, and provide the UV fault indication in a fourth state when the under-voltage is detected. The OC indication circuit provides an OC fault indication in the third state when the over-current flag is in the first state, and provides the OC fault indication in a fifth state when the over-current flag is in the second state. The UV fault indication and the OC fault indication are configured in a wired-or to provide a common fault indication.

A method and system for supplying power at a voltage selected from a plurality of voltages. Power is initially received at a first voltage. Embodiments communicate with an AC adapter to get device identification and see if the AC adapter supports other voltages. If so, embodiments communicate with the AC adapter to get more information about the adapter and identify what voltages the adapter is capable of providing. If one of the voltages would allow an information handling system to operate more efficiently, embodiments negotiate a power supply contract to operate at a second voltage. When the information handling system powers down, the system resets to operation at the initial voltage.

System and method for selecting a voltage on a barrel adapter interface

Monolithic power stage (Pstage) packages and methods for using same are provided that may be implemented to provide lower thermal resistance/enhanced thermal performance, reduced noise, and/or smaller package footprint than conventional monolithic Pstage packages. The conductive pads of the disclosed Pstage packages may be provided with a larger surface area for contacting respective conductive layers of a mated PCB to provide a more effective and increased heat transfer away from a monolithic Pstage package. In one example, the increased heat transfer away from the monolithic Pstage package results in lower monolithic Pstage package operating temperature and increased power output. In another example, a monolithic Pstage package may be provided with an adaptive application-oriented interface and a multi-function pin that allows the same monolithic Pstage package to automatically detect and select between a relatively higher power information handling system application, and a relatively lower power information handling system VR application.

Monolithic Pstages and methods for voltage regulators

A battery pack for an information handling system includes a battery cell configured to provide current to the information handling system, and a battery management unit including an output to the information handling system. The output provides a maximum continuous current (MCC) indication and a peak power (PP) indication. The battery management unit determines an amount of current that the battery cell provides to the information handling system and determines an optimum MCC value that the battery cell can provide to the information handling system. The battery management unit further provides a first value on the PP indication, the first value being greater than the optimum MCC value, sums the amount of current provided to the information handling system that is in excess of the optimum MCC value, determines that the sum is greater than a threshold, and provides a second value on the PP indication, the second value being less than the optimum MCC value.

A method may include, in a management controller of an information handling system including a power system configured to provide electrical energy to information handling resources of the information handling system, the power system having a direct-current input power source, a rechargeable energy storage device coupled to and rechargeable from the direct-current input power source, and a charger configured to control recharging of the rechargeable energy storage device from the direct-current input power source: retrieving parameters from one or more registers associated with the rechargeable energy storage device, the parameters including a desired voltage across terminals of the rechargeable energy storage device and a desired current for recharging the rechargeable energy storage device during a constant current mode of a charging cycle of the rechargeable energy storage device and communicating the parameters to the charger such that the charger controls recharging of the rechargeable energy storage device in accordance with the parameters retrieved from the one or more registers.

Power monitor information in an information handling system may be adjusted based on a battery voltage to account for a battery discharge state. The power monitor information may be scaled higher when the battery voltage is low to encourage the system to throttle and decrease power consumption. This adjustment increases the likelihood that the battery remains within safe operating limits.

An isolated voltage is output from the high impedance power delivery network to components of a secondary side of the alternating current adaptor system. A transition in a power state identification of an information handling system associated with the alternating current adaptor system is detected. An output voltage level of the alternating current adaptor system is alternated in response to the transition in the power state identification of the information handling system.

A method for reducing current leakage in a battery in communication with an information handling system (IHS). The method includes providing a battery management unit (BMU) in the battery, the BMU in communication with an embedded controller (EC), the BMU in a standby mode while the battery is coupled to the IHS, and configuring the BMU to exit the standby mode if an external power supply is coupled to the IHS. Also disclosed is an IHS which includes an EC in communication with a BMU, a power switch in communication with the EC and the BMU, and a control switch configured to be switched on if an external power supply is coupled to the IHS or if the power switch is activated without the external power supply, wherein the BMU unit exits the standby mode if the control switch is switched on.

Methods and system for reducing battery leakage in an information handling system

A system and method for resolving the blank screen issue when switching between graphics processing units. The system and method provide a graphics adapter LCD timing controller (Tcon) with a frame buffer specifically dedicated to storing previously presented screen data for use when switching graphic processing units. The system further includes a protocol comparator unit within a serial-to-parallel converter and a memory controller coupled to the protocol comparator.

Methods and systems are described for utilizing multi-mode dongles with peripheral devices. The multi-mode dongles are configured to provide standard mode signals for a standard mode of operation and alternate mode signals for an alternate mode of operation, for example, where a host information handling system is unable to provide the alternate mode signals to the peripheral device. The multi-mode dongle receives mode control signals from a host information handling system and automatically switches from a standard mode of operation to an alternate mode of operation, where the alternate mode signals are provided to the peripheral device, based upon the mode control signals. In one embodiment, the multi-mode dongle can be configured for a universal serial bus (USB) port, and the alternate mode signals can be associated with charging a consumer electronics (CE) device.
