An optimized two-stroke internal combustion diesel engine, suitable for locomotive applications, has been developed to meet the EPA locomotive Tier 2 emission standards. To achieve a low emission target below the EPA Tier 2 standards for NO(5.5 g/bhp-hr) and particulates (0.2 g/bhp-hr), several innovative changes have been made to the engine. These changes include: a new piston bowl geometry; low oil consumption piston rings; optimized surface finish cylinder liner; optimized fuel injection camlobe; modified fuel injector nozzle; new efficient aftercooler; optimized oil separator; and optimized turbocharger.

Optimized low emission two-stroke internal combustion diesel engine

Engine reconfiguration kits are developed for NOx emission reduction in Electro-Motive Division of General Motors Corporation model 645 diesel engines. The kits feature improved unit fuel injectors providing better fuel atomization with retarded injection timing and other improvements. Included new higher efficiency four pass counterflow aftercoolers provide reduced airbox inlet air temperatures. New connector pipes for the counterflow aftercoolers may also be included. Optional higher compression ratio pistons are available for increased fuel efficiency in some engine types. The kits reduce NOx emissions without increasing smoke, CO or particulate emissions or reducing performance.

Emission reduction kit for EMD diesel engines

A diesel engine emission control system which optimizes fuel injection timing over a range of air temperatures, air pressures, and engine air flow rates. The emission control system includes a control module interfacing with a fuel injection timing module which in turn interfaces with an engine fuel injection system having fuel injectors. The control module receives data from an air temperature sensor, an air pressure sensor, and an engine boost pressure sensor. The control module determines air density and the air flow rate through the engine to determine optimal fuel injection timing. The injection timing information is relayed to the injection timing module which alters the timing of the fuel injectors to operate the engine at a maximum efficiency possible within applicable emission regulation limits.

Engine emission control system and method

The present invention relates to a piston for an internal combustion engine. The piston includes a crown defined by a combustion surface and a cylindrical ring belt. The cylindrical ring belt has a first and a second ring groove extending about the circumference thereof, where the ring grooves are adapted to receive a first and a second piston ring. The combustion surface and the first ring groove define a first ring land therebetween. The first ring groove and the second ring groove define a second ring land therebetween. The cylindrical ring belt also has an elastic groove extending about the circumference thereof. The elastic groove has an upper wall and a lower wall interconnected by a radius 'R', where the upper wall and the lower wall pivot about the radius 'R', under loading of the piston to lower stress concentration within the crown.
